We would like to take the time to recognize the men and women of Local 3217 during National EMS Week, May 17–23. The firefighters of MWAA are composed of EMTs and paramedics who respond to more than 8,000 calls for service each year, the vast majority of which are EMS-related, throughout DCA, IAD, and the surrounding jurisdictions.

In addition to responding to these emergency incidents each year, they conduct monthly training, regularly provide public CPR and first aid classes, and provide standby EMS services for special events.

We appreciate their service, hard work, and continual efforts to improve healthcare outcomes through the delivery of evidence-based EMS care.

Today, Local 3217 says goodbye to one of our own, Master Firefighter Jasinski.

Brother Jasinski leaves behind 13 years of dedicated service with Local 3217 and more than 20 years in the fire service overall. His departure is not simply the loss of a position on a roster. It is the loss of decades of experience, knowledge, training, mentorship, and operational skill that took years to build.

Replacing a member like Brother Jasinski is not easy. It takes significant time, money, and resources to recruit, hire, train, and develop a firefighter to reach the level of experience and professionalism he brought to this department every day. Those are investments that cannot be replaced overnight.

Unfortunately, we continue to see valuable members leave the profession or move on in search of better opportunities to support themselves and their families while many continue waiting for meaningful change.

Brother Jasinski’s impact on this Local, this department, and the members he worked beside will not be forgotten.

Thank you, Brother Jasinski, for your dedication, camaraderie, professionalism, and commitment to the fire service. We wish you and your family nothing but success and happiness in your future endeavors.

Today, Virginia firefighters and public sector workers were let down.

IAFF Local 3217 stands with the VPFF, IAFF, and our brothers and sisters across the Commonwealth following Governor Spanberger’s veto of collective bargaining legislation.

We are deeply disappointed in a decision that turns its back on the firefighters, paramedics, EMS providers, and public sector workers who continue to serve Virginians every single day.

Despite this setback, our mission remains unchanged. Local 3217 members will continue answering every call, protecting the airports and communities we are sworn to serve, and standing ready for the traveling public and surrounding jurisdictions.

Fair contracts. Fierce commitment.

Not every call is an emergency fire or medical response. Sometimes it’s about helping the smallest members of the community too.

Today, members from PE301 assisted Arlington County Animal Control with reuniting a baby bird safely back into its nest after Animal Control requested assistance with a ladder.

Just another example of the everyday teamwork and community service our members provide throughout the region.

MWAA firefighters work a 56 hour work week.

That equals 2,912 scheduled hours every year, 832 more hours annually than a standard 40 hour employee.

Our schedule is in line with Fairfax County Fire & Rescue, yet many other departments across the COG region work fewer hours while receiving higher overall pay and a significantly higher effective hourly rate.

More nights away from family.
More weekends worked.
More holidays missed.
More time spent protecting the traveling public and the employees who keep our airports moving.

Despite those additional hours, our members earn a lower effective hourly wage due to the structure of our schedule and pay system. We also do not receive overtime until after 106 hours worked in a two week pay period.

Every day, the firefighters and paramedics of DCA and IAD continue to provide extraordinary emergency response, fire suppression, EMS, aircraft rescue firefighting, and incident mitigation at two of the nation’s busiest airports.

We continue to show up for this Authority and the communities we serve.

We are simply asking for what so many other public safety professionals already have: A fair voice through collective bargaining.

Fair contracts. Fierce commitment.
