If you are interested in living at Eastern Village, Montgomery County’s only cohousing community, we strongly encourage you to observe at least one of our monthly community meetings and attend one or more of our social activities. That way you will be able to see if cohousing and Eastern Village, in particular, is right for you.

Eastern Village is just 4 blocks from the Silver Spring Metro station on the Red Line. Parking is available behind the building in the Montgomery County Kennett Street Garage (no payment needed on Sunday) or on the street.

Reflecting on our Death Doula Weekend Workshop

This past weekend, our community gathered for a deeply moving and informative workshop. As a 55+ cohousing community, we believe that living well includes supporting one another through every stage of life—including the final one.

It was an incredible few days of connection and empowerment led by Gary Ross-Reynolds, PhD, RN, a dedicated End-of-Life Doula. Gary guided us through normalizing conversations around mortality, the practicalities of advocacy, and how to create heart-centered legacy projects.

We were also honored to welcome guest speaker Dianne Person, the Director of Elon University’s Anatomical Gift Program. Dianne shared profound insights into the "silent teachers"—donors who bequeath their bodies to help train the next generation of healthcare professionals, leaving their legacy through medical education.

Highlights from the weekend included:
- Learning how Doulas provide comfort and advocacy in hospice and home settings.
- Sharing heart-centered discussions that brought us closer as neighbors.
- Gaining practical tools for advanced care planning and comfort care.

A huge thank you to Gary and Dianne for sharing their expertise, and to every neighbor who participated with such open hearts. We are proud to be a community that holds space for one another with grace, dignity, and compassion.

We invite you to attend an in-person Intro Event for Newark Area Cohousing.

What is Cohousing?
Cohousing is a collaborative living model where residents design, develop, and manage their community. Individuals or families have private homes and share common spaces, resources, and responsibilities. It fosters engagement, belonging, and mutual support through shared activities and collaborative decision-making. Cohousing creates a close-knit, sustainable, and intentional environment that balances social interaction with individual privacy.

What is Newark Cohousing?
We're creating a diverse, intergenerational cohousing community and would be the first cohousing community in the first state.

Is it for you?
Designed for those who want more than a house — who want a true community. Built on values of connection, inclusion, learning and living lighter on the land, this is a place where neighbors look out for one another, friendships grow naturally, and life feels grounded.

Please bring a dish of food from your family or heritage to share (and include a list of ingredients so we can keep everyone safe). We’ll get to know each other a little better as we share the stories - happy, sad, or funny - that connect us to our food.

There will be a brief update on the progress of our cohousing project, which aims to create a sustainable, more socially connected neighborhood in the Newark area.

Cohousing is an intentional, collaborative neighborhood that combines private homes with shared indoor and outdoor spaces designed to support an active and interdependent community life. Cohousing is not a financial or legal model, but rather a descriptive term that emphasizes the active participation of residents in everything from design to governance.

Delaware is a state with no sales tax, and it doesn't tax Social Security.

We look forward to meeting you!
