America’s Blood Centers applauds U.S. Food and Drug Administration for issuing the Final Guidance, "Recommendations for the Development of Blood Collection, Processing, and Storage Systems for the Manufacture of Blood Components Using the Buffy Coat Method."

“America’s Blood Centers applauds FDA’s thoughtful consideration of stakeholder feedback and its commitment to developing a practical, science-based framework for the use of the buffy coat method for platelet production in the United States,” said Kate Fry, Chief Executive Officer of America’s Blood Centers. “We are particularly pleased that FDA incorporated key recommendations from ABC, including recognition of and support for the transition to DEHP-free blood collection systems, consideration of donor-related outlier events when evaluating residual red blood cell acceptance criteria, and acknowledgment that whole blood may be held for up to 24 hours after collection before component separation when supported by manufacturer’s directions for use. These changes will help facilitate innovation while maintaining the safety, quality, and availability of the nation’s blood supply.”

Following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, an extraordinary outpouring of volunteerism brought communities together in a time of profound grief and uncertainty. Across the country, blood centers extended their hours and mobilized to provide a meaningful way for people to respond—by giving of themselves to help others.

On this , as we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, America’s Blood Centers remembers the lives lost, honors those who answered the call to help, and recognizes the enduring spirit of generosity that continues to strengthen our communities.

America's Blood Centers congratulates Karim Mikhail, B. Pharm, MSc, on his permanent appointment as Director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER).

Having served as acting director, Mr. Mikhail’s permanent appointment provides vital stability for CBER alongside the nation’s blood communities.

“His leadership will help to continue the collaborative partnership between FDA, ABC, and community blood centers, advancing innovation while supporting a regulatory environment that ensures a safe and available blood supply,” said Kate Fry, CEO of America’s Blood Centers in our latest statement.
