Every career journey has a story worth sharing. 🌟

Through NorthStar GAZE, we create space for geo luminaries to share the experiences, lessons, challenges, and breakthroughs that shape their paths in GIS and beyond.

These conversations can do more than inspire; they can help someone see a future for themselves in a field where representation matters.

Your support helps us continue creating and amplifying these stories for the next generation.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Ever noticed that two maps of the same place can look completely different?

Maps are designed to help us make sense of geographic information, but the way that information is collected, organized, and displayed can shape what we see. Choices around scale, projection, data, and classification can all influence how a place is represented.

Understanding those choices helps us become more critical map readers and better GIS users. Because sometimes, what a map shows us is just as important as what it leaves out.

Science helps us understand the systems, patterns, and forces that shape our world. GIS adds another important layer: place.

By connecting scientific knowledge with location and lived experience, geospatial tools can help us better understand environmental challenges, identify inequities, and support more informed decisions.

At NorthStar of GIS, we believe science and technology are most impactful when they help create a more equitable future. 🌍

πŸ’ What questions could we answer if we looked at science through a geographic lens?

Data can tell us a lot, but understanding the people, communities, and experiences behind it is what gives that data meaning.

As GIS professionals, researchers, and storytellers, how we approach data matters. The questions we ask and the perspectives we bring can shape the stories that ultimately get told.

Today is Nonprofit Day! πŸ’›

We’re celebrating the nonprofits, organizations, and people turning purpose into action and working every day to create more equitable, stronger communities.

At NorthStar of GIS, we’re proud to be part of that work, using geography and technology to advance racial justice, expand representation, and create greater access to the geospatial field.

Nonprofit work is powered by people who believe change is possible and are willing to invest in that vision.

πŸ’› Be part of the purpose. Support the work, share the mission, and help us keep creating pathways toward a more equitable future.

✨ Monday Momentum

Starting something new can be uncomfortable, especially when you’re still figuring things out. But growth often comes from being willing to step into unfamiliar spaces, ask questions, and keep showing up.

Take that first step this week. Your next opportunity might be on the other side of it.

Maps don't simply show us the world; they help shape how we understand it.

Every map carries the choices, assumptions, and perspectives of its creator. That's why learning to question maps is just as important as learning to make them.

Before you trust the map, ask: who made it, and why?
