Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in history—the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Today, we honor the resilience, strength, and enduring contributions of Black communities while recognizing that the pursuit of equity and justice continues.

At NorthStar, we believe in building pathways that amplify Black voices, expand opportunities, and create a future where communities are seen, valued, and empowered.

As we commemorate Juneteenth, we reflect on the legacy of those who came before us and recommit ourselves to advancing equity, representation, and impact in the geospatial community and beyond.

Access to the internet shapes access to education, jobs, healthcare, and opportunity.

GIS helps reveal where connectivity gaps exist—highlighting communities that are underserved and often overlooked in conversations about technology and infrastructure.

By mapping the digital divide, GIS becomes a tool for equity, helping decision-makers better understand where support and investment are needed most.

🎙️New episode out now! Just in time for the long weekend...

Join the conversation with Aisha Jenkins PMP, CTT, the creator and season 1 host of the NorthStar GAZE Podcast, as she takes the seat as a guest. She shares the story behind the platform she built.

Joined by host G. Erica Phillips Phillips and co-host Eva Reid, MPA, GISP, Aisha reflects on why she created a space where Black geospatial professionals could tell their own stories, in their own voices, and on their own terms.

She gets real about representation in GIS, navigating corporate spaces as a Black woman, leadership, burnout, surviving big tech, and the intentional work of building something designed to grow beyond you.

We also hear about her current work, from teaching GIS at Howard University to supporting international geospatial capacity building through the International Telecommunication Union, all rooted in justice and equity.

This episode is personal, purposeful, and a reminder that sometimes the most powerful thing you can build is a table where others can sit.

Equity doesn’t happen by accident.

It’s built through intentional choices—
in data collection, analysis, partnerships, and storytelling.

In geospatial work, equity must be embedded at every stage.

Not as an afterthought—but as a foundation.

Growth doesn’t always happen in big moments. Sometimes it’s found in the small steps, daily effort, and choosing to keep going even when progress feels slow.

Keep showing up for yourself and your goals. What you build over time can become something greater than you imagined. đź’™
