We caught up with Rachel Gildiner - last year’s Impossible Dream Award winner!
What did it mean to you to be nominated?
We don’t go into Jewish communal work for the recognition. Being driven by the mission and vision you have for what can be in the world, necessitates an intrinsic motivation to stay in the work. And yet, the work can be hard, and lonely, and sometimes you’re not sure if you’re making a dent, getting any closer to building that world you envision. Being nominated for the Phyllis Margolius Impossible Dream Award indicated to me that the difference we’re making is being noticed. And not just noticed but celebrated – seen and valued by the community and those who have been impacted by the hard work and dedication that I and my team have been doing. It meant so much to have our work elevated and for an incredible panel of reviewers to learn more about our organization and its work. Just being nominated gave me a boost of morale and excitement that I didn’t even know I needed.
What inspired you to enter nonprofit work in the Jewish community?
I was invited into Jewish communal work by someone who saw my talents, my previous experience, and said “The Jewish world could really use you.” I cared about building community, raising funds for social good, and generating new ideas for existing communal gaps. Someone else who cared deeply about Jewish life said – come do those things here. I quickly fell in love with the people, the mission, the work, and have been supported by mentors, colleagues, and friends along the way.
Thank you for answering our questions!
Nominations close for this year’s Impossible Dream Award December 31st.
