Meet Bjorn.

Originally rescued from PG County's euthanasia list, he was in foster for 10 months. After two failed attempts at moving fosters, we had no choice but to place him in boarding. A foster stepped up in November to temp-foster him on weekends, and again over Christmas.

Now she's fallen in love and is fostering Bjorn until June with a dedication to getting him on track.

Training. Structure. Behavior modification medication. Everything a rescue dreams of in a foster.

But the cost of boarding plus weekly training since his fosters have had him until June will be more than $8,000.

Bjorn is just *one* example of the dogs we're saving at Laila's Legacy.

Our reality is that yes, it’s really the urgent: Adoptions are down.
Fosters aren't stepping up for animals in care.
The number of animals facing homelessness are increasing.
Medical costs continue to rise.

🤠 Wanted 🤠

Has anyone seen Rye’s Foster??? We know they’re out there but need your help to find them 🔎

Some positive feedback from her recent temp foster:
💭 “I had a very smart dog, but Rye is like Einstein.”

💭 “She is so lovely and gentle, but she really does want someone to be with her all of the time. She is sleeping behind me now in her bed as I work.”

💭 “I insisted our dogs take cookies etc gently as we had so many kids in and out, but Rye is even more gentle again. I only had to tell her once that she had to wait at the top of the stairs until I “released” her and she understood from then on in. She is a smart girl.”

Ideally Rye’s home looks like:
🏡 Time to be together - walks, sitting on the porch, watch TV, keeping you company while you work, playing, hiking - whatever you want to do Rye wants to do!
🏡 Only dog with no other pets or kids
🏡 Single or quiet households - Rye has a hard time sharing her humans

We received an email on a random Tuesday at 2 PM that Oscar, amongst others, had 24 hours to live. Thanks to the power of this community we found him a foster and saved his life.

Oscar is still waiting in foster for his forever home but for now he gets windows rolled down, comfortable hoodies, treats, lots of love, and a most importantly - life to live.

The moment this trend came around, it made us think of Laila. The most asked question we get at events is “Who’s Laila?” Which is valid - she’s our namesake, our reason for building this, and we’re honored to tell her story. Did you know one of the best ways you can help the animal welfare crisis happening right now is to sign up as afoster? 💭

Rescue organizations like Laila’s Legacy can’t function without fosters. Shelters, even with their kenneling space, are inundated right now and rely on fosters. But rescues support shelters by pulling animals so the shelter has more space and can lower their euthanasia numbers.

We started Laila’s Legacy to save dogs like Laila - large and bully breeds, misunderstood, in overcrowded shelters - and cats from inundated shelters.

Rescues like ours do not have shelter capacity though so we can’t pull from shelters to help their over capacity issue without fosters!

It’s all a trickle down effect!

“But what about boarding??” We, along with many other organizations in the DMV region rely on partners to have space for the dogs they struggle to place and in emergencies. In our case, we’re so lucky to have a partner with Pet Dominion but it takes so long to find fosters for animals placed in boarding because of misconceptions around boarding. For example, Rye and LB are the last two we have there and have been waiting for months - years. The pushback we hear most? “Well they’re safe there! So I’ll go focus elsewhere”. Yes, they’re happy and healthy and given so much love but it’s not a foster home.

So even for orgs who have a backup boarding partner, or shelters who have kennels and facilities, fostering is still desperately needed.

YES - YOU CAN FOSTER!

❌You don’t need experience.
❌You don’t need “the perfect set up”.
❌You don’t have to work from home.
❌You don’t have to be retired.
❌You don’t have to have an empty home.

Truly everyone and anyone can foster.

⭐️ Food, meds and vaccines, training, and other supplies are all covered by the org or donors. Mileage or other supplies provided by you as the foster can be written off at tax season as well!

Jackson’s big head is full of thoughts of finding his forever home! He’s a big, lovable mush who adores his humans and cuddling. He’s living in the city currently so a good fit for anyone not ready to head out to the burbs or doesn’t have a yard. He can live with dogs too ✨

He also needs a temp foster the 18-23rd and makes for a great house guest! You could have a big lovable hippo to keep you company over St. Patrick’s day weekend 🍀
