Black Music Month Spotlight: Hip-Hop
This week, we celebrate Hip-Hop, a cultural movement born in Black and Latino communities in the Bronx during the 1970s. Through music, storytelling, dance, art, and self-expression, Hip-Hop has become one of the most influential genres in the world.
Today, we honor Sylvia Robinson, known as the “Mother of Hip-Hop.” As a singer, songwriter, producer, and record executive, she helped introduce Hip-Hop to mainstream audiences by producing and releasing groundbreaking records that changed music history.
Did You Know?
Sylvia Robinson founded Sugar Hill Records and produced the landmark hit “Rapper’s Delight,” one of the first Hip-Hop songs to achieve commercial success and bring the genre to audiences around the globe.
