On January 19, 2021, The US Department of State formally determined that China and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are committing genocide against Uyghurs. But 50 colleges and universities around the United States continue to host Confucius Institutes, Chinese-government affiliated propaganda outlets designed to prevent students and educators from freely discussing China's human rights abuses.
The Athenai Institute believes that must change. We are a bipartisan, student-led coalition standing up for human rights and academic freedom. Since we released our Washington Appeal in May 22, 33 US Confucius Institutes have closed. Most recently, Athenai's campus activists helped close Confucius Institutes at Alabama A&M University, Tufts University, and The College of William & Mary . Now, we're working with more than a dozen state chapters around the country to close the remaining 50. We're raising funds to help our chapter leaders organize on-campus demonstrations, student government resolutions, petition drives, op-ed campaigns in student newspapers, and state legislative outreach to close the remaining Confucius Institutes in the US by year's end, starting with ten target universities:
1. Troy University (Alabama)
2. St. Cloud State University (Minnesota)
3. University of Central Arkansas
4. Houston Independent School District (Texas)
5. New Jersey City University
6. University of Akron (Ohio)
7. Cleveland State University (Ohio)
8. Xavier University of Louisiana
9. Central Connecticut State University
10. George Washington University (Washington, D.C.)
All funds raised as part of this campaign will go to supporting our student chapters' initiatives and helping our chapter expansion efforts.
Now is not the time for compromise. American educational institutions should not outsource students' educations to a genocidal regime.
