In colonial Maryland, coins were so scarce that to***co became commonly used as a form of payment. Debts, fees, and even rent payments could be made in pounds of to***co.

To***co continued to drive trade throughout the state, becoming a fixture of Maryland’s economy for generations. This was especially true in Southern Maryland, where the region’s soil and climate were well suited for growing to***co.

Today, most of the state’s farmland is dedicated to other crops and agricultural uses, but the legacy of its to***co heritage can still be seen in the historic barns and farms that remain.

While neighboring states began expanding to***co into a commercial crop as early as the 1600s, South Carolina’s to***co industry developed much later.

It wasn’t until the late 1800s, when farmers began looking for crops to supplement the region’s cotton economy, that to***co emerged as a promising new opportunity. The P*e Dee Region’s sandy, loamy soil proved well suited for bright leaf, a flue-cured variety that is also used in pipe to***co blends.

As production increased, farms, markets and warehouses sprang up throughout the P*e Dee. Towns like Mullins became centers of the trade as to***co grew into an important part of the region’s agricultural economy.

South Carolina produces far less to***co today, but its history remains part of the broader story of pipe to***co in America.

In the early 1800s, Lancaster County farmers were not yet growing to***co for a large commercial market. Instead, to***co was raised primarily for local and personal use, including chewing and smoking in pipes.

Over time, that small-scale cultivation grew into a much larger agricultural tradition. By 1859, Lancaster County was producing about 65% of Pennsylvania’s to***co crop. Production continued to expand after the Civil War, and by 1880, Pennsylvania had become the third-largest to***co-producing state in the country.

To***co remains a distinctive part of Lancaster County agriculture. While most Pennsylvania to***co today is grown for ci**rs, some leaf can still be found in pipe to***co blends.

The Pipe To***co Council (PTC) was on the ground in Cheyenne, Wyoming, for the 30th Annual Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival, held August 1 at the Little America Hotel & Resort. Hosted by Smoker Friendly, this year’s festival marked the first time the event was held in Cheyenne.

While pipe to***co imports experienced sharp swings over the past five years, exports followed a steadier long term climb.

U.S. pipe to***co exports increased from roughly 159,000 kg in 2020 to more than 452,000 kg in 2021 before moderating in 2022. In recent years, exports accelerated again, reaching new highs by 2025.

The broader trend suggests that U.S. pipe to***co products are reaching a significantly wider global market than they were just a few years ago.

Mexico emerged as the dominant export destination in 2025, while demand also expanded across parts of Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

The bigger takeaway is not just export growth. It is that pipe to***co has become a far more global category than it was at the start of the decade.

Pipe to***co turned out to be one of the biggest surprises in the import data. Imports jumped from around 207,000 kg in 2020 to over 1.4 million kg by 2022 before entering a volatile phase.

This shows a real shift in how much of this product is coming into the market.

PTC will continue monitoring the market trends to see if the category is settling into a new normal or whether another major shift is still ahead.
