This week at IROC’s STEM summer camp, students explored engineering through hands-on experiments, including building catapults and competing to see whose could launch the farthest. They also built simple circuits while learning how electricity works. Everyone had a great time learning, competing, and putting their skills into practice!!

🎂 Happy birthday, IROC! 🎂 On this day 7 years ago, a high schooler started a small effort to support refugee youth and their families. Since then, we have learned how a movement can grow with the support of a caring community. We may now have 200+ volunteers, several programs, and a network of partners, but the soul of IROC remains the same. No matter what happens, we will always base our work on a foundation of community support and mutual trust. Thank you to every volunteer, donor, and partner who makes this work happen 💙 💚

☀️ More STEM camp! ☀️
During the first three days of camp, students learned foundational science concepts through a variety of hands-on activities. They planted and dissected flowers to explore plant structure and the characteristics of living and nonliving things, created volcanoes to observe chemical reactions, and investigated the three states of matter through interactive experiments. Campers are eagerly awaiting the next activities to help them learn and grow through play! 💙 💚

☀️ Big smiles at camp! ☀️
This summer, IROC is running a STEM camp for refugee youth, led by rising senior Talia Taheri through the National Cathedral School Reynold Fellowship. The fellowship gave the funding to organize four weeks of hands-on science experiments for kids ages 4-12, giving refugee youth real access to STEM outside the classroom. Session one was a big success!

feels heavy this year with so few new arrivals reaching the US. However, IROC has continued to receive requests for help from refugees, asylum-seekers, and other humanitarian migrants. This weekend, we invite our wonderful DC area community to reflect on how they can support the newcomers in our area.

While there is much to worry about this year, there is also much to celebrate. At IROC, we want to thank all of our incredible volunteers who pour themselves into this work with such love and care. We are especially grateful to the refugees who work to help others, even as they themselves are still finding their footing. The fact that these people choose to work with IROC is the highest vote of confidence we could receive, and we strive every day to be worth of their trust.

Our volunteers teach us that everyone has something to offer. What a day at IROC camp!

Darya M. led the camp and we were so lucky to have Nabiha join us as a special guest! Nabiha is a Georgetown University student who also runs her own henna business — and she brought so much joy to our campers with her incredible art. 🌸

The kids had a blast with henna, bracelet making, soccer, and so much more — watching them light up was everything. 💙

“IROC means a lot to me — it has been like a stepping stone in my life, helping me move forward and grow.” Receiving these words from IROC client, scholarship awardee, and volunteer Zarlasht meant so much. She is proof that the IROC approach of investing in people makes a difference. Paint-stained hands. Big smiles. Goals scored. Community built. 🎨⚽
Last weekend, we held our free refugee camp and it was a huge success. Young refugees gathered outdoors to draw, paint, play soccer, and most importantly, connect.
What makes this camp powerful isn’t just what happens on the surface. It’s the sense of belonging created in every shared moment — for the youth who deserve safe spaces to thrive, and for the young volunteers whose worlds are expanded as they give their time to others.

Thank you to the incredible Woodley for leading this weekend’s camp, and to every volunteer who showered these young people with so much love and dedication. You showing up for these children matters so much.

Have you shopped at ? IROC volunteer Rania runs this small business, which employs refugee artists. By providing supplies and promoting their artwork on Etsy and at in-person markets, Rania helps these artists earn money from their talents.
