What a day at IROC camp!

Darya M. led the camp and we were so lucky to have Nabiha join us as a special guest! Nabiha is a Georgetown University student who also runs her own henna business — and she brought so much joy to our campers with her incredible art. 🌸

The kids had a blast with henna, bracelet making, soccer, and so much more — watching them light up was everything. 💙

For more of Nabiha’s art, follow her at Henna DMV Nabiha and Nabiha Islam!

A huge thank you to every volunteer and camper who made this day so special. This community never fails to warm our hearts. 💚

“IROC means a lot to me — it has been like a stepping stone in my life, helping me move forward and grow.” Receiving these words from IROC client, scholarship awardee, and volunteer Zarlasht meant so much. She is proof that the IROC approach of investing in people makes a difference. Even as she continues her own resettlement journey, Zarlasht has generously donated her time to IROC, helping newer arrivals settle in. Thank you, Zarlasht! 💙 💚

Paint-stained hands. Big smiles. Goals scored. Community built. 🎨⚽
Last weekend, we held our free refugee camp and it was a huge success. Young refugees gathered outdoors to draw, paint, play soccer, and most importantly, connect.
What makes this camp powerful isn’t just what happens on the surface. It’s the sense of belonging created in every shared moment — for the youth who deserve safe spaces to thrive, and for the young volunteers whose worlds are expanded as they give their time to others.

Thank you to the incredible Woodley for leading this weekend’s camp, and to every volunteer who showered these young people with so much love and dedication. You showing up for these children matters so much.

This is what community looks like. 💙 💚

Have you shopped at ? IROC volunteer Rania runs this small business, which employs refugee artists. By providing supplies and promoting their artwork on Etsy and at in-person markets, Rania helps these artists earn money from their talents. She even donates a portion of the proceeds to IROC to support our programming. Thank you, Rania, for everything you do! 💙 💚

As we close out , we want to take a moment to thank the more than 200 volunteers who make IROC what it is. With just a small group of part-time staff, IROC could never accomplish the miracles we are known for without these incredible individuals. We are in constant awe of your resilience, compassion, and dedication to the core principles of humanitarianism. Here we are sharing just a few of our many volunteers - please join us in thanking them for their amazing service! 💙 💚

More exciting news from IROC! We now have a Community Advisory Board to help guide IROC’s work and keep us grounded in the community we serve. This incredible group of individuals includes IROC volunteers, representatives from partner organizations, and former IROC clients. We are incredibly grateful to each of these individuals for generously donating their time and expertise to support IROC.

After a productive first meeting/brainstorming session, we are looking forward to deepening collaborations and leveraging IROC’s extensive contact with newcomer communities to continue closing service gaps in the DMV. Visit our website via the link in our bio to learn more about each of our amazing Advisory Board members!

🌸 Spring has arrived, which means camp is back! Youth volunteers engaged campers in arts & crafts, soccer, and other fun outdoor activities. Everyone enjoyed taking advantage of the beautiful weather over the weekend to get outside and make some friends!

Thank you as always to IROC’s Project Turquoise youth volunteers, who work hard to provide refugee kids with a safe place to play and simply be children. 💙 💚

IROC has a new Executive Director! Allison Bostrom has served as IROC’s Program Manager for over a year, overseeing IROC’s programming, managing the volunteer team, and maintaining partnerships. Allison will continue to serve in this capacity under her new title and is excited to deepen her engagement with all aspects of IROC’s operations. In particular, she is eager to steer IROC’s strategy as the local context for refugees and newcomers continue to evolve.

Allison brings experience working at nonprofits ranging from two employees to thousands, with a particular emphasis on migration and human rights. Outside of IROC, she works to support refugee service providers in collecting and using data to deliver effective services. Allison is grateful for the opportunity to engage locally via her involvement with IROC and is looking forward to continuing to collaborate across the region to fill gaps in service provision.

🧸 Eid toy distribution!
A BIG thank-you to community member Nayyiara and IROC volunteer Sami for working together to distribute tons of new, donated toys to refugee children in Virginia. Holidays can be difficult for newcomer families, who may find themselves unable to partake in their usual celebratory traditions. A little love from community members and organizations like IROC can go a long way in making a holiday memorable for these families! 💙 💚

Have you read our 2025 Impact Report yet? Thanks to the amazing support of the DMV community, IROC was able to find new ways of serving refugees last year, including:
🟢 Introducing an English scholarship program
🔵 Hiring a Community Navigator, Halima, to connect people to local services
🟢 Covering the cost of expensive, but potentially lifesaving, psychological exams for asylum-seekers

Head to the link in our bio to learn more about what we achieved together last year. No matter what comes our way in 2026, we know we can rise to the challenge thanks to your support!
