Protecting tigers means protecting the forests they move through—not just the land within Protected Area boundaries.

For nearly two decades, our partner Applied Environmental Research Foundation has worked with landowners and communities in western India to conserve private forests, restore degraded habitat, and keep important parts of the wider landscape connected. A recent tiger sighting in one of these forests is an encouraging reminder of what that work can make possible. 🐅🌿

Reaching this remote forest currently takes 8–12 hours on foot, making regular monitoring and rapid response difficult.

Built by our partner Neotropical Primate Conservation, the new ranger station in Peru’s Gran Simacache forest will provide a permanent base for patrol teams. It’s a practical investment in the people working on the ground to protect this forest and the wildlife that lives within it.

A new chapter for conservation in Madagascar is here!

Conservation Allies has supported the launch of Madagascar’s first National Protected Area Control Center, giving conservation teams a new way to connect satellite-based alerts with what is happening on the ground across 8.3 million acres of Protected Areas.

The initiative includes the new SYNERGI-MNP system, 100 ZOLEO satellite communicators for remote field teams, and 66 smartphones equipped to support patrol tracking and field reporting.

Instead of information remaining fragmented across individual Protected Areas, the new system brings it together—helping teams coordinate more effectively and respond to threats faster.

Most importantly, this infrastructure is designed to turn information into action, and we expect it to help reduce the impact of fires, deforestation and other threats across Madagascar’s Protected Areas.

The entire Conservation Allies team is heartbroken by the tragic loss of our colleague and friend, Mahery Rakotobe, who was killed on Monday, August 24, in Madagascar.

As our Madagascar Conservation Communications Officer, Mahery had an extraordinary talent for visual storytelling. Through his photographs and films, he brought Madagascar’s remarkable nature, wildlife—and the people working tirelessly to protect them—to audiences around the world.

A skilled videographer, producer, and entrepreneur, Mahery also ran his own production studio, RM STUDIO MG. Through his work, he helped give Malagasy conservation a voice and showed the world why protecting Madagascar’s forests and wildlife matters.

Above all, Mahery was a devoted husband and father. He leaves behind his wife and their two-year-old twin sons, who were at the center of his life.

We are deeply grateful for the time we had with Mahery, for everything he gave to conservation, and for the stories he helped bring to the world.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him.
Mahery will be deeply missed, but his work and his stories will continue to inspire us.

Congratulations to our partner on this historic achievement. After a century of efforts to protect Chornyi Lis, and against incredible odds, this ancient forest is finally established as a National Park.

11 серпня 2026 року Президент України підписав указ про створення національного природного парку «Чорний Ліс» на Кіровоградщині. Це рішення стало не тільки новим початком, але й логічним завершенням історії, яка тривала рівно сто років.

📍 Ще у 1926 році науковці обґрунтували необхідність охорони Чорноліського та Чутівського лісових масивів. Тоді цю ідею зупинили політичні репресії. Ініціаторів створення національного парку розстрілювали, інкримінуючи їм «очікування повернення царя» і «збереження панських лісів». Але навіть попри такі трагічні обставини ідея зберегти цей лісовий масив не зникла.

📋 У 2023 році Кіровоградська ОВА офіційно довірила Українській природоохоронній групі розробку наукового обґрунтування створення нацпарку. Наша команда разом із колегами дослідила територію, підготувала обґрунтування та пройшла з цим проєктом довгий шлях погоджень. Ця робота була б не можлива без спеціалістів Інститутів зоології і ботаніки НАН України, Черкаського та Херсонського університетів.

У 2025 році відбулася важлива виїзна зустріч за участі керівництва Держлісагентства (зокрема, тодішнього голови агентства Віктора Смаля), Кіровоградської ОВА та представників природоохоронної спільноти. Саме тоді Чорний ліс вдалося показати не на карті, а наживо — разом із його природною та історичною цінністю. Після цього необхідно було розробити проєкт створення національного парку та погодити його з усіма вищими органами виконавчої влади. Особливу роль у цій роботі відіграла очільниця Всеукраїнської екологічної ліги Тетяна Тимочко. Погодження надали всі урядові органи влади, а сам проєкт був розроблений без будь-якого спеціального фінансування.

І вже сьогодні маємо указ Президента. До складу НПП «Чорний Ліс» увійшло 13 710,2441 га земель державної та комунальної власності. Це Чорноліський і Чутівський лісові масиви, лучні ділянки у витоках Інгульця та частина РЛП «Боковеньківський».
Тут збереглися старовікові дерева, велика кількість рідкісних видів і один із найпівденніших великих масивів широколистяних лісів України — буквально ліс на межі зі степом. Чорноліський і Чутівський масиви є одними з найбільших природних широколистяних лісів на південній межі їхнього поширення у Східній Європі.

🇺🇦 Водночас Чорний ліс — це не лише про природу. Це місце українського спротиву. Тут тривала національно-визвольна боротьба, а опір радянській владі продовжувався ще багато років після її встановлення. Збереження Чорного лісу — це також збереження пам'яті про людей, які боролися за Україну. З усім цим особливо важливо, що парк отримав історичну назву — «Чорний Ліс», яка нагадує про героїчне минуле.

Сто років тому ця територія мала стати заповідною. Сто років знадобилося, щоб ідея нарешті стала реальністю.
Дякуємо всім, хто допомагав довести цю справу до кінця.

На цьому наша робота не закінчується. Продовжуємо працювати над розширенням природно-заповідного фонду України.

На Чорний ліс також попереду чекає багато роботи — від організації охорони до розроблення планів його розвитку та збереження природи.

Бажаємо наснаги всім, хто працюватиме в новому національному природному парку. Ми ж продовжимо робити все, щоб таких історій зі щасливим фіналом в Україні ставало більше 🌳

Connectivity is not a luxury for a wide-ranging primate. It is what lets a population find mates, shift range as conditions change, and stay viable across generations. Break a forest into islands and you lose the species that need the whole landscape.

That is what makes the Corridor Forestier Ambositra–Vondrozo (COFAV) irreplaceable. Among its lemurs is the Critically Endangered Greater bamboo lemur, which survives in only a handful of remaining habitats on Earth.

Conservation Allies supports two local organizations working inside the corridor— Ny Tanintsika and the Association Miaradia —whose teams patrol the forest, monitor its wildlife, and work alongside the communities that live in it. With both active, coverage now runs across the entire Protected Area.

Recently, Conservation Allies funded a coordination meeting in Manakara that brought the Fitovinany Region, Ikongo District, the Manakara court, the gendarmerie, commune mayors, VOI community representatives, and the NGOs working inside the corridor to one table. They left with a shared operational plan for COFAV's Conservation Brigades—faster authorizations, clearer responsibilities, and law enforcement committed to backing patrols.

Illegal clearing happens in the gaps between patrols. Those gaps are closing.

Our partner Kawsay Biological Station in Peru has received an important new conservation designation—and Conservation Allies is proud to support the work behind it.

After a lengthy evaluation by Peru’s Ministry of the Environment, Kawsay’s 437-acre reserve has been formally recognized as an Other Effective area-based Conservation Measure (OECM) and added to the World Database on Protected Areas.

The designation recognizes places that may not be traditional Protected Areas but are still delivering meaningful, long-term conservation outcomes. For Kawsay, it recognizes the ongoing work to protect its reserve while supporting research, capacity building, and wildlife conservation.

It’s also an important step toward the global 30×30 goal of protecting at least 30% of the planet’s land and oceans by 2030. Read the full story to learn more about Kawsay’s new designation and why OECMs matter for conservation.

In the communities that ring Madagascar's Protected Areas, the same distance that keeps a village close to the trees keeps it far from healthcare—and families who can't reach maternal care also can't choose the timing or spacing of their children. Meeting that need changes what's possible: healthier mothers, girls staying in school, and the pressure that falls on the forest when families have no other options starts to ease.

Near Mantadia, the closest health center is almost six miles from the forest edge. Conservation Allies' health brigades move village to village, bringing family planning and women's health door-to-door and 100% free of charge 🌱
