🚨 **When Should You Call 911? Understanding Emergencies & Lift Assists** 🚑

Many people aren’t sure when it’s appropriate to call 911. If you believe someone’s life, health, or safety is at risk, **don’t hesitate—call 911.** Dispatchers and emergency responders are there to help.

One type of call you may hear about is a “lift assist.”

🔹 **What is a Lift Assist?**
A lift assist happens when someone has fallen or is unable to get up on their own. Firefighters or EMS respond to help the person up safely and check to make sure they aren’t injured or experiencing a medical emergency.

🔹 **Why Call 911 for a Lift Assist?**
Even if someone says they’re “fine,” falls can cause hidden injuries or be the result of a medical problem such as dizziness, illness, or weakness. Responders can assess the situation and determine if further medical care is needed.

🔹 **Examples of When to Call 911**
✔ Someone has fallen and cannot get up
✔ A person is unconscious or difficult to wake
✔ Chest pain or trouble breathing
✔ Signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech)
✔ Serious injuries or uncontrolled bleeding
✔ Any situation where you believe someone’s life or safety is in danger

🔹 **When 911 May NOT Be the Right Option**
🚫 Minor illnesses like a common cold or mild fever
🚫 Prescription refills or medication questions
🚫 Transportation to routine doctor appointments
🚫 Minor issues that can safely wait for urgent care or a primary care provider
🚫 Non-emergency questions for police, fire, or EMS

Many communities also have **non-emergency phone numbers** for police, fire, or town services that can assist with these situations.

💡 **Remember:** If you truly aren’t sure whether it’s an emergency, it’s always okay to call. Dispatchers can help determine the best response.

Our goal is to keep the community safe while ensuring emergency resources remain available for those who need them most.

🚨Wareham EMS local 2895 members responded to over 50 calls from 0800 Monday to 0800 on Tuesday morning.

Calls were handled by 2 ambulances staffed with 3 providers each.

🚑Various emergency calls were made and handled. We responded to various low oxygen levels, difficulty breathings, chest pains and other cardiac problems, unresponsive people, Fire assists, a cardiac arrest, and various other medical and public assists.

⚠️Inclement weather posed many challenges for first responders. Snow and high winds created very poor visibility. Snow build up led to responders having to hike into calls, dig out homes, and carry patients out in our rescue tarps, stair chairs, and occasionally the Wareham Fire Dept ice rescue boat.

We continue to respond to a higher volume of calls as the town deals with the aftermath of the storm. Since the storm, we have responded to well over 100 EMS calls.

Please be safe. The roads are still not safe, please limit driving to what is absolutely essential.

🙏Thank you to Onset Fire Dept, Wareham Fire, Police, Emergency Management, Municipal Maintenance, the Massachusetts National Guard, and the Tobey Hospital staff for their efforts and giving us so much assistance, even when extremely busy in their own right.

Please make sure to stay warm and safe during this weekends winter storm!
