So, what else happened in 1894? 🏡
Yesterday, I shared that 1894 was the year Labor Day became a federal holiday. But that same year also marked an interesting development in the story of protecting American homes.
The testing laboratory that eventually became Underwriters Laboratories—better known as UL—was founded in 1894. Its early work focused on testing electrical equipment and materials to reduce fire hazards and improve safety in homes and workplaces.
And protecting a home looked very different back then.
Homeowners typically purchased standalone fire insurance policies. Theft and personal liability were separate protections, and the comprehensive homeowners insurance policies we know today were still decades away.
Think about how far we’ve come—from individual fire policies and the beginnings of safety testing to the extensive standards and insurance protections homeowners rely on today.
Tomorrow, on Labor Day, I’ll bring our 1894 story full circle as we honor the generations of American workers who paved the way. 🇺🇸

During a morning walk, I saw my neighbor’s yard dug up — and trenches running through the garage. I knew immediately they were replacing cast iron pipes.

My first thought was, that could have been us.

I felt so relieved that my husband and I chose to be proactive. After a video scope inspection revealed severe deterioration in our cast iron pipes, we had them lined before they reached the point of failure.

132 years later, Labor Day remains a time-honored American holiday. 🇺🇸

In 1894, Labor Day became a federal holiday, recognizing the contributions and achievements of American workers and the historic labor movement that fought for fair wages, safer working conditions and more reasonable working hours.

It’s easy to enjoy the long weekend without thinking about how it began.
But behind Labor Day are generations of workers who helped build our country, strengthen our communities and create many of the workplace protections we benefit from today.
Look how far we’ve come since 1894.

And 1894 had another interesting connection to something most American homeowners rely on today.
Any guesses?

Look how far we’ve come since 1894. 🇺🇸

That was the year Labor Day became a federal holiday, honoring the contributions and achievements of American workers and the labor movement that fought for fair wages, safer working conditions and more reasonable working hours.

But 1894 was significant for another reason—one with an interesting connection to protecting the American home.
At the time, homeowners typically relied on standalone fire insurance. Theft and personal liability were separate protections, and the comprehensive homeowners policies we know today were still decades away.

That same year, the testing laboratory that would eventually become Underwriters Laboratories (UL) was founded, helping advance electrical and fire safety standards for homes and workplaces.
132 years later, we still honor those who paved the way.

And with a little Labor Day humor, I suppose I labor over something too—helping people recognize that growing older doesn’t have to mean giving in to old age.

For me, encouraging people to be proactive about how they age is truly a labor of love.
Age is inevitable. How we choose to live is up to us.
