Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity (RAD) Diversity Vision Conference

RAD was pleased to present 4 speakers, experts in their fields of diversity, cross cultural communication and implicit bias, to the residents of Rossmoor, at our first Diversity Vision Conference.

Event speakers helped us recognize several areas where implicit biases can hinder our ability to interact with all cultures, races and genders. The conference was an opportunity for us to further our awareness of how we can promote respect and understanding instead of division, and consider how we can act to support diversity in our community.

Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity (RAD) Walk for Democracy, kickoff by the RAD Uke Band

At this, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity (RAD) walked to reaffirm the values of it, the Constitution, and our history of democracy. Constitutional government depends not just on the faithfulness of elected and appointed officials but also on the active participation of citizens to keep our democratic republic free, a nation of laws, and a place that truly practices “liberty and justice for all,” as we recite in the Pledge of Allegiance.

We walked to affirm our commitment to these ideals.

Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity (RAD) 6th Anniversary Annual Meeting-Fest

RAD held our 6th Anniversary Meeting-Fest on March 20, 2026 with guest speakers, Mary Taylor, Soghra Sadaqat and Sergio Jaime Lopez, speaking on our theme “DEI Now, Keeping Hope Alive,” and music by Carmencita Lozano and Lauren Carley. Over 100 members and friends came together in community, to learn more about the work of RAD, to hear inspiration from our speakers on DEI and keeping hope alive, to recognize Aki Rasmussen for her 6 years of leadership and service to RAD, and to enjoy small plate desserts from many lands.

Thank you to all who attended and shared the joy and celebrated the accomplishments of RAD over the past 6 years.

Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity (RAD) Membership Meet-Up

RAD hosted its first Membership Meet-Up on Friday, January 30, to give members and prospective members an overview of RAD programs and a preview of 2026 events. Attendees came together to interact with each other and give input on what they would like to see RAD do. The meeting ended with the RAD Uke Band leading the song “Imagine” by John Lennon and a rousing “This Land is Your Land” by Woodie Guthrie.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Walk, "Drum Major for Justice."

The African Americans and Friends Club was pleased to invite the Rossmoor Community to join members on Saturday, January 17, for a walk to commemorate the national holiday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Walk was co-sponsored by the Diversity Consciousness Committee (DCC) of the Interfaith Council, Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity (RAD) and the LGBTQ+ Alliance. It was also supported by the Rossmoor chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW.).

The walk began with a brief gathering at Gateway at 11 and continued around the Creekside golf course. The theme of the walk was “Drum Major for Justice”. Participants honored Dr. King by walking together as “drum majors” for justice, peace and righteousness, and carried signs with images of Dr. King and quotes from his writings, and American flags to wave. Everyone in the Rossmoor community was warmly invited to join in.

RAD Coexist Banner Raising and Singalong

Around 50 brave souls weathered frigid temperatures and came to the 6th Annual Rossmoor Advocates for Diversity - RAD Coexist Banner singalong, one of my favorite events of the year! The banner represents diversity and inclusion in Rossmoor and beyond, and we sing songs of peace and love to usher in the holidays.

Thanks to the RAD Uke Band for a wonderful kickoff to the holidays (Let there Be Peace On Earth, Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World, Lean On Me, I Am Willing, Imagine, Get Together, Let It Be, All You Need Is Love, This Land). And thanks to Lynn Gold who beautifully signed (American Sign Language) to Imagine and All You Need Is Love.

Happy Holidays to all from RAD for whatever traditions you celebrate!

RAD Reels Screening and Discussion, Steven Okazaki’s "Unfinished Business: Japanese American Internment Cases"

Lynne Thorner, Director of RAD Reels, presented Steven Okazaki’s “Unfinished Business: Japanese American Internment Cases” and was honored to have the director/filmmaker present to give insights into the film and answer questions. This film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1986, and, although produced 40 years ago, the film's themes are relevant today.
