Building Our Standards Together

As a developing Honor Guard, we are continually establishing and refining our ceremonial procedures and standards.

In the coming weeks, we will share educational posts explaining the “how” behind our practices. These updates are intended to improve consistency, reinforce best practices, and support a more unified and efficient team.

These procedures are more than instructions—they form the foundation of the standards that guide our Honor Guard as we grow and serve with professionalism and pride.

Every element of a Nurses Honor Guard tribute has purpose.

We gather with dignity.

We remember the nurse.

We honor a life devoted to the calling of nursing.

We tell the story of the profession through She Was There.

We formally complete her watch through the Final Roll Call.

We extinguish the Nightingale Lamp, marking the completion of her nursing journey.

We entrust meaningful keepsakes to the family.

We offer a nurse-centered prayer, providing a moment of reflection, introspection, and spiritual comfort.

We render our Final Respects.

Each step is intentional.

Each symbol carries meaning.

Each honor reflects the gratitude of a profession for one of its own.

Post 4 – Quiet Acts of Honor

The most meaningful acts of service are often the quietest.

Honor Guard volunteers do not seek the spotlight. They stand in silence so another life may be honored. They serve without applause because the focus belongs where it always should—on the nurse whose legacy is being remembered and the family who entrusted us with that sacred responsibility.

True honor is not found in being recognized.

It is found in recognizing the worth of others.

Post 3 – Continuing the Calling

For many Honor Guard members, retirement from nursing does not mark the end of service—it marks the beginning of serving in a different way.

The bedside may be behind us, but the calling remains.

Through solemn tribute, respectful presence, and compassionate support for grieving families, we continue to live the values that defined our nursing careers.

The calling to care does not end. It simply finds new ways to serve.

National Nonprofit Day | August 17

On National Nonprofit Day, we recognize the power of service—and the difference that can be made when people give their time and talents for the benefit of others.

The Hudson Valley Nurses Honor Guard is a nonprofit with a clear mission:

Nurses honoring nurses so no nurse is forgotten.

When a nurse’s final watch ends, our volunteers stand in tribute to a life of care. Through Nurse Funeral Honors, memorials, and other ceremonies, we uphold nursing traditions and ensure each nurse is remembered with dignity and gratitude.

Our focus is not on those who serve in the Guard, but on the nurse being honored.

Each tribute—white rose, extinguished lamp, and final roll call—says:

Your service mattered.
You are remembered.
You remain among nurses forever.

On National Nonprofit Day, we continue this mission across the Hudson Valley—one nurse, one family, one honor at a time.
