The Time Capsule that was buried in 1976 was dug up today on the courthouse lawn. We did not intend to open it today, but wanted to ensure the capsule was where it was rumored to be. There were no official records of where it was buried after it was moved during the Courthouse renovations in the early 2000s, only word of mouth. When it was moved back in the early 2000s, water was seeping from it then as well.

As we expected, once we had dug enough to discover it, we noticed that water was seeping from the coffin. The type of coffin that was used to store the items was not fitted with any outer layer - any water would eventually eat away at whatever sealant was used to close it back in 1976.

As soon as we got around the edges of the capsule using shovels, a hole was revealed at the bottom of the capsule, and it began to gush out water. Small pieces of paper began to come out with the water and we decided that in order to keep the items from becoming mush against the hole and turning into mud as it dried, we opened the lid and began grabbing items out and putting them into tote boxes.

Everything was removed. Some things look to be salvageable, and we will display what survived 50 years underground at the Chamber of Commerce building starting Monday during regular business hours.

Flag Day in Voca 🇺🇸 had some locals get together and decorate a cedar tree in patriotic decorations to celebrate the upcoming 250th birthday of the USA! Thanks to Janie Deans, Sue Rowe, Barbara Freeman, Judy Hanks and Julie Atchison. Afterwards, a couple of us cooled off at Dotson-Cervantes Winery! Local is best!!
