🕰️ The Columbus Clock — A Souvenir from 1893 🕰️

Step back to 1893 with this fascinating piece of horological history!

These charming clocks were created as souvenirs for the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, held to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s 1492 voyage.

Designed to resemble the types of clocks that might have existed during Columbus’s time, the Columbus Clock incorporates an early verge and foliot escapement—a fascinating pre-pendulum timekeeping system that predates the development of the pendulum clock.

Thousands may have been made and distributed during the exposition, but remarkably few survive intact today. Their wooden construction made them especially vulnerable to the passage of time.

While modern replicas were produced in the 1970s, the clock in our collection is something truly special—it is an original 1893 example, connecting us directly to one of America’s most famous world’s fairs. 🇺🇸🏛️

Come see this unique survivor and discover more fascinating stories of timekeeping at the West Coast Clock & Watch Museum!

⏰ A Glimpse into 17th-Century Time keeping⏰

Step back in time with this remarkable English miniature lantern clock, dating to circa 1670.
Made as a portable timepiece and alarm clock, this beautifully crafted clock would have been a luxury item for the very wealthy. Its compact size allowed it to travel with its owner—perhaps moving from one grand castle or estate to another. 🏰

Originally fitted with a balance wheel escapement, the clock was later converted to the more accurate anchor escapement and pendulum, reflecting the remarkable advances in horological technology during the period.
Nearly 350 years later, this little clock offers us a fascinating glimpse into the lives, craftsmanship, and ingenuity of early clockmakers. ⚙️🕰️

⏱️✨ A New Accutron Display at the West Coast Clock & Watch Museum! ✨⏱️

The Accutron watches that were generously donated have now found a new home in our latest display! We’ve added vintage 1961 Accutron advertisements along with two additional watches to help tell the story of this groundbreaking technology.

Several of the watches are currently running, and we’re getting special batteries for a few of the others. Our hope is that our docents will be able to bring some of these amazing timepieces out of the display so visitors can hear the unmistakable hum of an Accutron tuning fork movement! 🎶⌚

It’s a little piece of horological history you don’t just see—you can hear it!

Come visit us and experience the innovation, precision, and unique sound of the Accutron. đź’š
