It is with heavy hearts that the North County San Diego 12-step recovery community says goodbye to a truly remarkable man, Michael Calvert. Mike was more than a friend — he was a light in the recovery community, someone who gave tirelessly of himself to others with love, encouragement, and compassion.
Michael celebrated recovery with the heart of a warrior. He had a way of making every person feel valued, seen, and cared for. One memory I will always hold close is when my youngest daughter turned 9 and asked if Mike could make one of his famous cakes for her birthday. He did, and he spoke about it proudly as one of his greatest honors. That was who Mike was — someone who found joy in bringing happiness to others.
Over the years, Michael made thousands of birthday ice cream cakes for people celebrating milestones in recovery. To many, those cakes symbolized hope, love, and another chance at life. He gave guidance, kindness, and support freely to everyone who crossed his path.
Mike also shared countless stories about the deep love he had for his children, grandchildren, and his entire family. You could hear the pride in his voice whenever he spoke about them. His love for his family was undeniable, and it was clear they meant the world to him.
Mike’s presence will be deeply missed by so many people whose lives he touched. His impact on this community will never be forgotten.
Goodbye, my friend. One thing your passing has taught me is to never miss the opportunity to tell the people in my life that I love them. I only wish I had said it to you more often.
One of Mike’s favorite sayings was, “It’s gonna be okay.” And because of the love and strength you shared with all of us, we will carry those words with us always.
Fly high, my friend, until we meet again. Rejoice with the loved ones you’ve been reunited with, and know that your memory, your kindness, and your spirit will continue living on through every life you touched.
