This month, the Virginia Trucking Association is proud to support our partners at TAT Nonprofit and their second annual Youth on Transportation Safety Month.

Believe it or not, human trafficking can happen in any community, including ours. It might be scary or sad to think about, but the good news is that you can do something about it! It doesn’t take huge heroic acts, but just small everyday actions you can take in your life to make a difference, no matter your age. Visit www.tatnonprofit.org/youth to get started.

She found photographs of her unconscious mother on her father's phone. There were hundreds of them, taken over a decade while her mother slept.

Caroline Darian was 41 years old when she discovered that her father, Dominique Pelicot, had been drugging her mother Gisèle and inviting dozens of men into their home to assault her. The trial that followed became one of the most watched criminal cases in French history. But Caroline was facing a second, private horror: she could not rule out that she had been drugged too.

In 2024 she published "And I Stopped Calling You Dad," a book about what it means to be the daughter of a man convicted of serial r**e, and a possible victim of the same man. She also founded M'endors Pas, a French advocacy group working to change how drug-facilitated s*xual violence is prosecuted and recognized in law. The phrase means "Don't let me fall asleep."

She did not have the luxury of only grieving. She had to build something instead.

In 2004, a 16-year-old girl shot and killed a man who had bought her for s*x. She was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison.

Cyntoia Brown had been trafficked since she was a child. The state of Tennessee looked at that fact and sentenced her to 51 years before parole eligibility. She was a minor. Her trafficker walked free.

Brown earned a bachelor's degree behind bars, and a coalition of advocates and celebrities pushed her case into national view. In 2019, after 15 years, Governor Bill Haslam granted her clemency. She walked out. Then she got to work. Her Foundation for Justice, Freedom and Mercy has since identified over 100 women whose circumstances mirror her own, trafficking survivors prosecuted for acts of survival.

She didn't just get out. She mapped the others still inside.

Do you know why major sporting events can lead s*x trafficking to increase?

⇨ Traffickers often target large groups of men, such as at sporting events. When the demand for s*x trafficking increases, traffickers will supply victims to meet that demand.

Could you spot potential human trafficking if you saw it? Equip yourself ahead of time by knowing the red flags 🚩 of trafficking and remaining vigilant. You can help stop this crime by reporting suspicious behavior.

This May, we are hosting the second annual Youth on Transportation Safety Month, a united effort by the transportation industry to educate youth and caregivers about the issue of human trafficking and what they need to know about the issue to stay safe and make a difference in their communities.

Whether by displaying TAT’s youth- and caregiver-focused posters and videos throughout the month, distributing stickers and postcards to youth and caregivers in your community, posting on social media throughout the month (guide pictured below - reach out to [email protected] if you'd like the PDF), training your employees during the month or supporting activities in your community, there’s a role for every TAT partner!

Will you join us?

Learn more at www.tatnonprofit.org/safety-month and feel free to reach out if you’d like to discuss more.
