Veterans Community Response VCR has adopted the warrior’s creed “we bring everyone home " and believes this is a community responsibility.

Veterans Community Response is a non-profit organization composed of firefighters, veterans and therapists working diligently to support combat veterans in their post war readjustment process. Our programs center on the intention of helping combat veterans develop the skills to navigate their post war challenges to achieve productive and satisfying lives after serving our country. It is our firm belief that with support, compassion and understanding we can create a safe and structured environment that will promote the healing process for all who serve. We are proud to rely solely on the resources and volunteerism of our community and our unique collaborative healing approach provides veterans with proven and effective methods to adjust to post-combat life.

We are heading back out to assist a Gold Star spouse who has requested support with cutting, bucking, and limbing trees. Two tractors will be on site to help move debris to the disposal pile.

We are seeking 5–6 volunteers on October 20–21, beginning at 0900 hrs each day. The location is in Cheney.

This project is part of ongoing wildfire fuel mitigation efforts. She lives in Cheney.

Lunch will be provided.

Join us for Heroes Dinner this Friday at Elk VFW Post 5924. All are welcome! It’s steak ‘n bake night and dinner starts at 5pm. At 6pm or so, we’ll get to learn more about Cody and Donovan. Both gone too soon and gone too long…

On October 8th, VCR had the honor of returning to the Kalispel Tribe of Indians’ Better Together Celebration. This event took place at Northern Quest Casin.

For five years, the Tribe has gathered nonprofits from throughout our region to recognize and uplift the organizations they have supported.

We are truly blessed to be part of their circle of generosity.
The evening was filled with meaningful conversations, shared purpose, and the joy of connecting with other nonprofits who are making a difference in our community.

It has been three years since the Gray Fire in Medical Lake, and we have once again been called to support our neighbors. We will be assisting two neighborhoods in the coming weeks.

The first neighborhood is located near Silver Lake and will require a multi‑day effort. Our planned work dates are 16–18 October. Several trees have begun to fall near the roads residents use daily, and additional trees are located within the drain field of their septic systems.

Our role will be to cut these trees down and cut them into manageable lengths for the property owners. We are organizing this as a neighborhood event, with residents assisting by moving trees and branches using tractors or other equipment.

Meals will be provided by either VCR or the neighborhood.

If you are able to help with this operation, please let us know.

Details for the second neighborhood, scheduled for the following weekend, will be sent in a separate email.

October 2nd and 3rd, Veterans Community Response (VCR), in partnership with the Northeast Chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen of Washington, recently completed a two day chainsaw training class. Nine students and eight trainers participated in this comprehensive, hands on learning experience.

During Day One, participants received classroom instruction covering chainsaw safety and Sawyer PPE, first aid, Stop the Bleed, adult and infant CPR, AED use, chain sharpening with three types of tools, basic chainsaw maintenance, bucking and felling fundamentals, and an introduction to crosscut saws.

Day Two brought students into the field, where they practiced bucking and felling techniques under the supervision of experienced trainers.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all students, trainers, and partners who made this training possible. Your dedication strengthens our ability to prepare volunteers who support our communities and public lands.

VCR VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY 13 OCTOBER, 1300 RHR - 1700 HRS

We will be assisting a veteran who has been a long‑time VCR volunteer. He was directly in the line of the Fairview Fire and is still working to get back into his home after extensive smoke damage. As part of his recovery, he has exterior painting that needs to be completed on his outbuildings.

This project is part of a larger effort supported by Numerica Credit Union, and their volunteers will also be on site helping with the painting.

Yesterday, 3 October, Veterans Community Response (VCR) participated in the Spokane Stand Down at the Numerica Arena—our first time attending this important community event.

A sincere thank‑you to Terri Fowler and Vern Vanderhoef for representing VCR and staffing our table throughout the day. Their presence ensured that veterans received a warm welcome and learned about the programs and support VCR provides.

The event hosted approximately 90 vendors and welcomed around 400 veterans. We were able to speak with many attendees, make meaningful connections, and share information about our retreats, programs, and community support efforts.

VCR is grateful for the opportunity to participate and looks forward to continuing to strengthen our presence at future Stand Down events.

All Era Retreat BBQ – 25 September

Veterans Community Response hosted its first post‑retreat BBQ on 25 September at the VCR office, bringing together 11 veterans and 5 family members for an evening of connection and community.

This gathering was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect after the retreat. Everyone enjoyed great food, shared stories, and spent time together with plenty of laughter throughout the evening. Including families added a meaningful layer to the conversations, allowing them to be part of the experiences and adventures their veterans spoke about.

We are grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make this first after‑retreat BBQ such a success.
We will be hosting another get‑together in 90 days, and we look forward to seeing everyone again.

Veteran’s Community Response Volunteers Support Trail Clearing in the Salmo Priest Wilderness

On 18-20 September, Veteran’s Community Response(VCR) volunteers Randy Voll and Roger St. Julian partnered with the Northeast Chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen to clear trees that had fallen across a trail in the Salmo Priest Wilderness Area.

Using crosscut saws, horses, and mules, the team packed equipment and traveled into the backcountry to complete the work.

For Roger St. Julian, the day was full of firsts—he had never ridden a horse or used a crosscut saw. He embraced both challenges and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, especially the opportunity to ride.
