National Nonprofit Day recognizes the enormous impact these organizations have on communities. It’s an opportunity to thank the millions of employees, volunteers, donors and supporters who work to improve the lives of others.
The date coincides with the anniversary of the signing of the Tariff Act of 1894, a law that allowed certain charities to be exempt from paying federal taxes in the United States. Over time, August 17 became a date dedicated to recognizing the work of the nonprofit sector.
There are approximately 1.3 million nonprofit organizations in the United States, employing more than 12 million people, making the sector one of the largest employers in the country. Furthermore, the vast majority are small organizations with a strong community focus.
Through our work, StrengthUnited supports families, prevents sexual and domestic violence, and provides healing and support to those who have survived abuse. Our goal is to transform a traumatic event in the life of a person or a family into a point of strength.
