Build Community🌮🥙

One of the most powerful ways we build community is around the table.

Food is more than nourishment — it is memory, identity, and connection. As we gather for the Freedom Day Festival 2026 to celebrate Juneteenth, a day that honors freedom, resilience, and the enduring strength of Black communities, we also recognize the powerful role that food plays in telling our stories. Recipes carry histories across generations: they hold the flavors of home, the ingenuity born of hardship, and the joy of sharing meals with loved ones.Whether it's a cherished family dish, a favorite holiday treat, or a meal that reminds you of home, every recipe has a story worth sharing.

That's why we're inviting you to contribute to the Freedom Day Festival Community Cookbook.

This year, there's a special addition to Freedom Day Festival in Vadnais Heights...

A community art experience led by Cadex Herrera
Join us for a powerful, hands-on community art project. Create a portable mural with fellow community members and Cadex Herrera, Twin Cities–based muralist, educator, and community artist known for the George Floyd mural and many other public works.

Originally from Belize, Cadex brings years of experience creating large-scale murals and participatory art across Minnesota. His work has been featured in collaboration with organizations like the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and White Bear Center for the Arts, and is known for uplifting the voices of immigrants, communities of color, and everyday people.

You can be part of the art
Attendees of all ages will have the opportunity to contribute to a collaborative artwork that reflects our shared stories, cultures, and hopes for the future. Whether you're an experienced artist or just curious to try something new, you can be part of this piece.

As our community grows more diverse, the Freedom Day Festival is a chance to celebrate culture, honor our shared history, and come together in the spirit of unity — because nobody is truly free until we all are free.

We created this event intentionally to bring meaningful cultural experiences to the northeastern suburbs, so people can celebrate where they live, work, and build community. Freedom Day is a reminder that freedom is fragile, and it grows stronger when communities stand together.

Join us for cultural performances, businesses, vendors and crafters, art, free food, history, and community as we celebrate freedom, resilience, and the work that continues today. We look forward to celebrating with you!
