🌈 Some cats leave paw prints on your heart. Others leave them on an entire rescue. 🐾
Yesterday, we said goodbye to a very special boy.
Buckwheat.
He lost his battle with lymphoma. And saying that still doesn’t feel real.
Buckwheat wasn’t just a cat we rescued. He was one of the two cats who started something.
He wasn’t just any cat. He was the beginning of F.A.T. Katz. ❤️
And somehow, this sassy, sweet, long-haired brown tabby managed to teach us more about rescue, love, and letting a cat be exactly who they are than we ever could have imagined.
A gorgeous, boy with a personality all his own, Buckwheat had already decided what he thought about adoption events when he was young.
His answer?
Absolutely not. 😂
He had no interest in performing for strangers, charming potential adopters, or pretending to be anything other than the wonderfully sassy cat he was.
But Buckwheat had another plan.
Instead of finding an adopter at an event, he found his person.
He completely won over our executive director and ended up being adopted into the very family that would love him for the rest of his life.
And that was Buckwheat.
He did things his way.
He had opinions. He had attitude. He had quirks. He had feline friends. He even became a little celebrity after winning a Best Cell Phone Photo Contest. 📸
But most importantly, he had someone who never stopped choosing him.
Someone who saw past the sass.
Someone who loved him on the easy days and the hard ones.
Someone who understood that rescue isn't about finding the perfect cat.
It's about finding the person willing to love the cat who is standing in front of them.
Buckwheat reminded us of that.
He reminded us that some cats need patience.
His mom loved every part of him — the stubborn parts, the silly parts, the difficult parts, and the beautiful parts.
She stayed.
She loved him.
She cared for him.
And she never stopped seeing the precious cat underneath it all.
That is what rescue is supposed to be.
We don't give up on them because they're difficult.
We don't stop loving them because they're sick.
We don't walk away because they need more time.
We stay.
Because somewhere inside every scared, sick, stubborn, overlooked cat is a life worth fighting for.
Buckwheat was proof of that.
And now he is gone.
But his story doesn't have to end here.
💙 This is where we need you.
There are cats in foster homes tonight who need food.
There are cats who need veterinary care.
There are cats who need medications, litter, supplies, and safe places to heal.
There are cats who haven't met their person yet.
And just like Buckwheat once needed someone to believe in him...
they need us to believe in them.
So today, we're asking you to help us turn our heartbreak into something powerful.
🌈 Please make a donation in Buckwheat's memory.

You don't have to do something big.
$5 matters.
A bag of food matters.
Sharing this post matters.
Telling someone about rescue matters.
It all becomes part of the legacy.
And every cat we help from this point forward carries a tiny piece of Buckwheat with them. 🐾🌈
Your kindness could be the reason another cat gets the second chance Buckwheat had.
Because that is how we honor him.
Not by letting his story end with his death — but by carrying his legacy forward.
Buckwheat was our first.
And because of him, there will be many more.
🌈 Run free, sweet Buckwheat.
You were sassy.
You were stubborn.
You were ridiculous.
You were beautiful.
You were deeply, completely, ridiculously loved.
Enjoy your ☁️ naps on clouds (the fluffiest, of course), 📦 climb into heavenly cardboard boxes (which are always just the right size), 🌸 roll around in fields of catnip flowers, 🐾 have endless zoomies, ✨ purr so loudly, 🌙 sit on moonbeams, and🪽 zoom around with your tiny angel wings.
And now, you are part of every cat we save from here forward.
And you will never, ever be forgotten. ❤️🐾
Please help us save the next one. ❤️🐾
