We'd love to introduce another great volunteer for The Walter Hive!
Michael's connection to The Hive began nearly eight years ago when he attended a Saguaro Man orientation with no prior knowledge of the organization. He quickly fell in love with The Hive’s mission and its spirit of “do-acrocy”—the idea that everyone has the ability to jump in, make something, and contribute. After attending an open house and seeing artists and volunteers sharing their creative talents, Michael knew he had found a community where he belonged.
For the past 3–4 years, Michael has volunteered at The Hive, teaching leather workshops from his expertise at and pitching in wherever he’s needed, from workshops to Third Fridays.
For Michael, the best part of volunteering is seeing the excitement on someone’s face when they finish a project they made with their own hands. But it’s the sense of community that keeps him coming back.
“People need to feel creative in a world that pushes human value as a function of production. The Hive’s mission helps everyone who enters remember that they are artists—that their creativity is unique to them and inherently valuable.”
Michael believes we are all artists, even if many of us lose touch with that part of ourselves along the way. Through its staff, volunteers, and community, The Walter Hive reminds people that they can learn, create, and express themselves—and that they have always been artists.
As Michael puts it, volunteering at The Hive means more than simply being a helper: “You are the solution. You see the gaps nobody else can see. Your contribution is only possible through you. You aren’t a helper. You are an essential and uniquely important piece of the essence of The Walter Hive.”
