GRANT RECIPIENT STORY:
Lulu’s story is one of resilience and hope in the harsh Arizona desert. Found by campers 40 miles down a dirt road near the border wall, Lulu had recently given birth and was painfully thin. Her teeth—both top and bottom front—were worn away, likely from trying to survive by chewing rocks and sticks. The campers, unable to leave her behind, brought her to Sonoran Desert Dog Rescue when animal control refused to help.
Barbara, the rescue's founder, welcomed Lulu and immediately set about providing her with the care she so desperately needed. Lulu spent her first days in an outdoor kennel, awaiting a veterinary check to ensure she was free of parvo and distemper. She was diagnosed with a tick-borne disease, requiring a month of antibiotics, and eventually underwent surgery to be spayed. Lulu also faces future dental challenges, but none of this has dampened her spirit.
Despite all she’s endured, Lulu is remarkably friendly and affectionate, craving attention and companionship. Highly adoptable, she’s potty-trained, walks well on a leash, and knows basic commands. Lulu loves to walk in the desert, always staying close to her person and never needing a GPS collar. She has tried new homes twice, but her loyalty and strong bond with Barbara led her to escape and return both times, one day even jumping through a window to get back.
Lulu’s journey is a testament to the strength and devotion of desert rescue dogs. She’s looking for a forever home where she’ll never be left behind again, but until then, she’s cherished and safe at the rescue. Her story is a reminder of the importance of compassion, patience, and second chances.
Do you have the time to love Lulu and keep her safe in your home?
