Baltimore Hunger Project

Baltimore Hunger Project Baltimore Hunger Project, a 501(c)3, removes the barrier to learning by providing food and resources to food insecure children in our community.

Inspired by the story of an organization in Florida that provides weekend nutrition packages to elementary school children, we are focusing on Baltimore City and County elementary schools with a high percentage of students who qualify for FARM by discreetly providing them with packages full of a weekend's worth of food. We strongly believe improved nutrition on the weekends enables "at-risk" children to be better prepared to participate in their education.

There is something pretty special about seeing our warehouse fill up with backpacks.

Not empty backpacks—but backpacks filled with everything a child needs to walk into school ready for the year ahead.

Because of the generosity of our community, students at our partner schools will receive backpacks packed with notebooks, folders, pencils, crayons and other school essentials. For families balancing the rising cost of groceries and everyday expenses, that support matters.

At Baltimore Hunger Project, our work has always been about removing barriers to learning. Sometimes that means weekend food. Sometimes it means stocking a school pantry. And sometimes it means making sure a child has the supplies they need on the first day of school.

To everyone who purchased, filled, collected and delivered backpacks for our students—thank you.

You helped make the start of this school year a little easier for families and a lot brighter for kids.

Deliveries arrive at our warehouse, but we see where it’s headed next.

Into weekend food bags. Onto school pantry shelves. And ultimately, into the hands of children who need it.

Our warehouse team keeps thousands of items moving each week so children across our community have one less barrier standing between them and learning.

Because hunger shouldn’t determine what’s possible for a child.

One of the best parts of our summer was opening our doors each week for Message Makers and Coffee & Kindness — and welcoming back the same groups of friends who came together, week after week, to create thousands of handwritten notes for the children we serve.

Before summer ended, they left us one more gift.

Some of their favorite messages now live on our glass boards at Baltimore Hunger Project — a daily reminder of the kindness, encouragement and community that filled our space all summer long.

Kindness leaves its mark. And this one will stay with us!

Please Share: School is almost back in session — and so are BHP packing sessions!

Each week, volunteers come together at Baltimore Hunger Project to pack the weekend food bags that help ensure local students have the food they need when they’re away from school.

Our fall packing sessions are now open, and we’d love to have you join us! Whether you’re a longtime volunteer or have been looking for a way to get involved, this is a great place to start.

A huge thank you to Camps Airy & Louise for an incredible donation of nonperishable food!

With their summer season wrapping up, they generously shared their surplus with Baltimore Hunger Project. These items will head straight to our partner schools, helping stock pantries and giving students and families access to food when they need it.

We’re grateful for partners who see an opportunity to make a difference—and act on it.

Bring your team together for a hands-on experience that combines team building, community impact, and a deeper understanding of food insecurity in Baltimore.

There are several ways companies can partner with BHP — from packing sessions and sponsorships to food drives and collecting our most-needed items. We’ll work with your team to create an opportunity that makes sense for your company while directly supporting the children we serve.

The warehouse was buzzing today.

Our incredible Thursday volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help reorganize our space as we prepare for another school year of serving children across Baltimore. At the same time, donations kept arriving—hygiene kits, birthday kits, and snack bags—each one a reminder of how our community continues to show up.

Every box moved, every kit delivered, and every volunteer hour brings us one step closer to a strong start for the school year.

We can’t wait to show you what’s taking shape. Stay tuned!
