SafeHouse of the Desert SafeHouse of the Desert is Coachella Valley's only 24/7 shelter for youth in crisis. Finally, a sense of relief...of hope.

We are a non-profit helping runaways, throwaways, and victims of human trafficking. Teens who don’t know where else to go are always welcome at our shelters—all they have to do is show up. Parents who are interested in early intervention are encouraged to call us to set up a screening for their child. At the screening, they meet with a Marriage and Family Therapist who tells them more about what they can expect to receive from our holistic approach and listens to the struggles they’re having.

Building Stronger Communities Through Collaboration!

SafeHouse's Birgit Phillips recently attended Palm Springs Unified School District's Vision 2031: Annual Legislative Breakfast and State of the District on October 1.

Led by Superintendent Dr. Marcus Funchess and the Board of Education, the event brought together community leaders, education partners, and regional representatives to discuss shared priorities and develop strategies to strengthen the future of local youth and families.

Birgit is pictured with Bill from the Thousand Palms Chamber of Commerce and Dr. Marcus Funchess, Superintendent of Palm Springs Unified School District.

At SafeHouse, we believe strong partnerships are essential to creating opportunities for young people to thrive. We're grateful to be part of a community working together toward a brighter future!

Last week, our Executive Director, Kendra Tankersley-Davis, MS, had the honor of attending the P.A.C.T. Conference, hosted by the Child and Family Policy Institute of California.

Kendra was invited to present on working with children from around the world and within Native American communities, sharing practical strategies for building relationships, providing support, and understanding the unique experiences and perspectives of the children we serve.

The conference also brought together professionals and subject-matter experts committed to preventing and stopping child trafficking. It was an opportunity to learn, share ideas, build connections, and strengthen the collective work of protecting vulnerable children.

At SafeHouse, we believe every child deserves to be seen, heard, valued, and safe. Preventing child trafficking takes all of us, through education, awareness, collaboration, advocacy, and the courage to speak up.

We are proud of Kendra for representing SafeHouse and contributing to this important conversation.

We were honored to be invited to participate in the National Charity League Philanthropy Fair in the Coachella Valley!

Birgit Phillips, our Safe Place Coordinator, represented SafeHouse at this special event, where National Charity League mothers and daughters had the opportunity to meet and learn more about the charitable organizations they support throughout the community.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share more about our programs, the young people we serve, and the many ways our community can come alongside youth experiencing homelessness.

Thank you to the National Charity League for including SafeHouse and for helping connect the next generation of philanthropists with organizations making a difference right here in the Coachella Valley!

A HUGE thank you to our amazing partners at BevMo! for keeping our youth at Harrison House stocked up with tons of snacks, soda, water, coffee, and dozens of eggs!

These may seem like simple everyday items, but they make a huge difference for the young people we serve. Many of our youth are still working toward financial independence and do not yet have a steady income. Having access to nutritious food, snacks, and everyday essentials helps take one more worry off their shoulders while they focus on building a safer, more stable future.

We are so grateful for community partners like BevMo! who continue to show up for our youth in meaningful ways. Thank you for helping make sure our young people have what they need, both today and as they work toward tomorrow. 🖤❤️

❤️ Showing Our Heart in the Community! ❤️

Birgit and Julie had a wonderful time representing SafeHouse at the Show Your Heart Mixer and Non-Profit Showcase at the Rancho Mirage Library! More than 50 local non-profits participated, giving the community an opportunity to learn about the organizations working every day to make a difference in the Coachella Valley. More than 250 community members came through to connect, learn, and discover ways they can get involved.

One of the highlights of the day was an unexpected and very special connection. We had the opportunity to meet Monique Gonzalez, a former SafeHouse client who now works with Desert Arc. Monique shared a story about receiving support from SafeHouse staff more than 15 years ago, and hearing how that experience made a difference was incredibly meaningful to us.

Even more special, Monique is already helping us in this current role by working with a youth at Harrison House. To reconnect more than 15 years after SafeHouse was part of Monique's story and now have the opportunity to work together to support another young person was truly amazing. ❤️

Moments like this are such a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do. ❤️

Thank you to the Rancho Mirage Chamber of Commerce for bringing our nonprofit community together and for holding this wonderful event every year!

📚 Community Outreach at La Quinta High School

We’re always working to make sure young people know help is available and how to access it. ❤️

Our Safe Place Coordinator, Birgit Phillips, recently visited La Quinta High School to connect with students and share information about SafeHouse’s programs and services.

Birgit provided students with information about the support available to youth in the Coachella Valley, including how to access services when they or someone they know needs help.

Sometimes, knowing where to turn is the first step toward getting help. We’re proud to bring that information directly into the community and onto school campuses. ❤️
