The learning continues 📚 with the help of some of our amazing partners! 💜

This week, our new-volunteer cohort were schooled in what it takes to show up with presence, compassion and true understanding for families.

On Thursday we had the pleasure of welcoming the incredible Allyson Williams of Comfort Keepers, who shared valuable insights about complementary services and the extra layers of support available to families.

We also heard from Melinda Pugh and Katie Wiltfong of Buena Vista Home Health & Hospice, who guided the class through the deeply meaningful dimensions of spirituality and bereavement in end-of-life care, as well as the role social work plays in navigating hospice journeys.

Every session brings our class closer to being there for neighbors in their most challenging moments, and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication! 🙌

A special thank-you to the 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗮𝗸𝘀 Inn for generously donating the space for our 8-week program.

All hail the Therapist in Black!

It was another night to remember at Charity Karaoke-Sing for a Cause. Though we did not win the judges' hearts this time around, our team had a blast cheering on John and the rest of the evening's talented performers. Among our favorites: Cancer Support Community, Conejo Schools Foundation and MANDO Youth Outreach.

Special thanks to Laura Conway for putting together an incredible fundraising event that united so many dedicated local nonprofits. Win or lose, it remains a rare, valuable opportunity to connect with fellow community organizations and share our mission at Hospice of the Conejo.

We will be back next year!

Meet our 2026 class of volunteers-in-training! 💜

This week, the cohort joined Assistant Director Heather Toole for an in-depth session on grief—exploring how loss reshapes lives long before and long after a passing. Because no two people grieve alike or on any set timeline, empathy requires meeting people exactly where they are.

To put that into practice, the group took part in a powerful empathy-building exercise: walking through an end-of-life journey from initial diagnosis and treatment to hospice care. Step by step, volunteers were asked to part with what matters most to them—family and loved ones, independence, nature, and personal belongings—until nothing remained.

Experiencing that profound sense of loss firsthand is what prepares our volunteers to show up with true presence, compassion and understanding for the families we serve.

Thanks as always to Best Western Plus Thousand Oaks Inn for the space.

Class is now in session for our 2026 New-Volunteer Training Program! The distinguished Dr. Lanyard Dial, former longtime president, CEO and medical director of Livingston Memorial VNA, addressed this year’s cohort yesterday about all things hospice, from its origin, history, development, goals, all the way up to present events.

Our eight-week training course — led and organized by Assistant Director Heather Toole (a graduate of the program herself) — is required of all Hospice volunteers hoping to provide support and companionship in private homes and assisted care facilities. The course equips those who attend with the knowledge, information, lessons and perspective to be effective in walking individuals and families through the end-of-life transition.

The course is entirely free and paid for through private donations, fundraising and grants. A special thank-you to the amazing 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗮𝗸𝘀 Inn for donating the space and to Dr. Dial for donating his time and wisdom.

It’s been 11 months since Marty Uskali, aka “Melvis,” brought down the house at Charity Karaoke 2025. This year, another member of the Hospice family—therapist John Vangerov—is bravely taking the mic. And just like Melvis, he needs YOUR help to conquer the stage.

What can you do? Vote!

Even before the big show on Oct. 11, Charity Karaoke accepts online votes in support of the 20 contestants. Votes are just $5 each with no limit on how many times you can vote. The top three vote-getters win serious cash for their charities—$5,000 for 1st place, $2,000 for 2nd and $1,000 for 3rd! Even better, all voting proceeds are split among all 20 participating nonprofits.

Cast one vote, 10 votes, or 50 votes today and help “The Therapist in Black” rock his way to the top!

(Note: Once you select the number of votes you'd like to cast, select “No. 10: Hospice of the Conejo - John Vangerov” from the list to ensure the vote registers for John. You can also leave a few words of encouragement.)
