Tonight, our VFW Post was honored to present the 2026 Ronald Hill Memorial VFW Post 2245 Scout of the Year Award to Grayslake Troop 1996 Eagle Scout, Gray Waldenstrom.

Some of our earliest ties to the community involve youth groups and perhaps none are stronger or more lasting than the relationship between the VFW and America's scouting organizations. In fact, our partnership with the Boy Scouts of America dates back to 1915 when VFW Post 2100 helped to establish Troop 1 in Everett, Washington.

The VFW has long supported Scouting because it helps build the next generation of leaders through service, citizenship, and patriotism. These young men and women remind us that the values we defended in uniform continue to live on through community involvement and volunteerism.

Congratulations, Gray, on this outstanding achievement. We are extremely proud to recognize your dedication, character, and commitment to serving others and our community. Thank you for coming tonight to our meeting and sharing a little bit about Scouting and the impact it has had on you growing up. The future is bright with young leaders like you in it. 🇺🇸⚜️🫡

Today we commemorate the 82nd anniversary of D-Day. We honor the bravery and sacrifice of the Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944, a day that forever changed the course of history. May we never forget their courage and heroism.

Memorial Day Weekend is an incredibly important time for our Ronald Hill Memorial VFW Post 2245 and its comrades. We are honored to help preserve the history, memory, and legacy of those who gave their lives in service to our country, while also helping educate our community on the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today.

In addition to our Memorial Day Poppy Drive, our VFW Post was honored to participate in the annual Flag Laying Ceremony at Avon Cemetery hosted by local Boy Scout Troops 96 and 1996.

VFW Post Comrade and Army Staff Sergeant Veteran Taryn Mata led the charge and shared powerful remarks about the importance of honoring our heroes even after they have departed this world. She proudly joined the Scouts in placing flags at the gravesites of our departed veterans in remembrance of their service and sacrifice.

Memorial Day gives all of us an opportunity to pause, reflect, and remember those no longer with us while continuing their legacy so they are never forgotten.

The bond between our VFW Post and the Scouting community is truly special. We are always grateful for these young men and women who continue to demonstrate dedication, leadership, patriotism, and a deep respect for service to others.

Thank you to the Scouts, leaders, families, and community members who continue these meaningful traditions and help ensure our veterans are always remembered.

Our Ronald Hill Memorial VFW Post 2245 Color Guard proudly led the Jeep parade through our downtown as our community came together to bring awareness to the tragic reality that far too many veterans are still fighting battles long after their military service ends.

The “22 A Day in May” event hosted by Jeeps4vets served as an important reminder to everyone that came out that conversations surrounding veteran su***de, PTSD, mental health, and transition struggles matter deeply and they can ultimately save lives. All proceeds raised at today’s event goes to Veterans Path to Hope, a veteran non-profit that provides immense services and support to our Lake and McHenry County veterans and their families.

However, our Post was honored to participate not only in the parade, but also by setting up our community outreach tent where we connected with residents, fellow veterans, families, and supporters throughout the afternoon. Thanks to the generosity of those who stopped by our booth and participated in our 50/50 raffle, we are always so grateful. We also were proud to present a $500 donation to K9s For Veterans, Nfp, an incredible nonprofit organization supporting veterans through the healing companionship and service of trained dogs.

Most importantly though, events like these allow us to do what our Post believes in most: boots on the ground community engagement.

Today also served as our Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW Day of Service, and we are grateful to stand beside organizations and community members who continue showing up for our nation’s veterans in meaningful ways.

Thank you to everyone who attended, visited our tent, donated, asked questions, shared stories, and helped make today impactful. Together, we continue honoring those we’ve lost while fighting for those still here beside us. 🇺🇸

April 🗳️ Elections bring May Installations 🫡 at Post 2245!

Over the last two months, our Post has been identifying the hard-charging veteran volunteers in our Post through nominations in March, elections in April, and now Installation at our May meeting tonight at the Grayslake Heritage Center and Museum.

One of the most meaningful parts of the ceremony is the “Officers’ Obligation” administered by the Installation Officer to the newly elected and appointed leaders of the Post. As the oath is recited, the officers stand in formation shoulder-to-shoulder with one hand raised and the other placed on the shoulder of the comrade in front of them. This is a powerful reminder that leadership within the VFW is NEVER CARRIED ALONE. Each officer quite literally stands supported by the veteran beside them while our Commander stands at the front grasping onto our Nation’s Colors 🇺🇸, symbolizing the responsibility of leading the Post while carrying forward the mission of service, sacrifice, and commitment to our fellow veterans.

Please join us in acknowledging these veteran leaders who have “Rogered-Up” to continue the good work of our Ronald Hill Memorial VFW Post 2245 here in Grayslake:

🇺🇸 VFW Post Commander: Michael Magnetta, US Navy
🇺🇸 Senior Vice Commander: Thomas Martin, US Navy
🇺🇸 Junior Vice Commander: Steven Magnetta, US Navy
🇺🇸 Quartermaster: Samantha MacGregor Garcia, US Navy
🇺🇸 Judge Advocate: Jay Adams, US Air Force
🇺🇸 Chaplain: Ryan Reppe, US Navy
🇺🇸 Service Officer: Lalena Zoe Magnetta, US Navy
🇺🇸 3-Year Trustee: Rodney Christensen, US Army

Thank you for your support and service to our Post, our community, and most importantly our Comrades!

No One Does More for Veterans than the VFW. ❤️🤍💙

Our very own Post 2245 Comrade Steve MacInnes is going to be at The Landing Zone in Grayslake for a special opportunity to share his story and signs copies of his book, The Warrior’s Ride Isn’t Over.

This inspiring book takes readers on a journey through Mac’s experiences in service and the challenges he faced after returning home reminding us that for many veterans, the fight doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. It’s a story of resilience, perseverance, and the strength to keep moving forward.

Come meet our comrade, hear firsthand about his journey, and connect with others in our community as we honor the stories of those who served.

This event is free and open to the public! Thank you so much Veterans Path to Hope of Lake County!

Four 🎖️ Veterans - One AMAZING story to tell 🇺🇸❤️

Yesterday, Lake County Honor Flight #30 departed for Washington, D.C. after a heartfelt sendoff at Foss Park Golf Course in North Chicago, where a group of deserving veterans began their journey to visit the memorials built in honor of their service and sacrifice.

Our Post has been a proud supporter over the years of Lake County Honor Flight, and this particular one is especially meaningful to our VFW family because all four individuals involved are very close to our Post, with Steven and Jessica proudly serving as members of Ronald Hill Memorial VFW Post 2245.

Vietnam Veteran Paul Ritter is being escorted by his grandson, Steven Magnetta, a fellow veteran and the Junior Vice Commander of our VFW Post.

Vietnam Veteran Richard Stevens, an American Legion member, is being escorted by his daughter, Jessica (Stevens) Magnetta, also a veteran and member of our VFW Post.

That means we have a husband-and-wife veteran team serving as guardians for their own grandfather and father during this unforgettable experience! 🇺🇸 To us, this is what service, family, and legacy are all about.

One generation answered the call to serve our nation, and the next generation followed in their footsteps. 🫡 This weekend, they will now walk beside them through the memorials and history they helped shape.

We are incredibly proud of Paul, Richard, Steven, and Jessica, and grateful to organizations like Lake County Honor Flight for making moments like this possible for our veterans.

Have an amazing trip, comrades. You deserve every moment of it. ❤️🤍💙

Last week, members of our Post had the honor of attending the Grayslake Community High School Dist 127 Board of Education meeting to recognize our local winners of the Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW Voice of Democracy youth essay program.

This program gives high school students the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of democracy, citizenship, and service which are ALL powerful topics that matter deeply to our veteran community. This year’s theme was: “How are you showing Patriotism and support for our Country?”

Please join us in congratulating our Post winners:
🇺🇸 Addison Messinger 🥇
🇺🇸 Kate Davies 🥈
🇺🇸 Allison Poole 🥉

We are incredibly proud of these students for their thoughtful words, leadership, and commitment to civic engagement. The future is bright in Grayslake. 💚
