A reminder that we will be gathering this Saturday to celebrate the life of our beloved Comrade and Past Post 2245 Senior Vice Commander, Vincent Martorano. 🇺🇸

Visitation and a memorial service with full military honors will be held Saturday, September 26, at Marsh Funeral Home in Gurnee from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Vince was deeply loved by his family, his fellow veterans, and our Post family. We hope those who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him will join us as we remember his life, his service, and the friendship he gave so freely.

You Are Never forgotten, Comrade. ❤️🇺🇸🫡

The third Friday in September is observed as National POW/MIA Recognition Day, and today we paused to remember those who endured captivity and also remain missing or unaccounted for.

At 1100 this morning, comrades from the Grayslake American Legion Post 659, Ronald Hill Memorial VFW Post 2245, representatives from the Veterans Assistance Commission of Lake County, fellow Mundelein VFW and American Legion members, Village of Grayslake Trustees, and members of our community gathered at Millennium Court for a POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony. There are STILL more than 81,000 U.S. service members that remain unaccounted for from past conflicts.

For those who served, for the families who still wait, and for those who have never come home, our promise remains:

You Are Not Forgotten.

🥃 Our summer-long annual Bourbon Raffle is coming to an end, and we’ll be drawing the winner this Saturday at The Vine’s 17th Annual Bourbon & B**r Festival!

You do NOT need to be present to win. We’ll call the phone number listed on the winning ticket so you can claim your bourbon package.

Still need tickets? We’ll have them available at the festival, too!

We hope to see you Saturday, and as always, THANK YOU for supporting VFW Post 2245. Every dollar raised goes right back into the veteran and youth programs we support here in our local community. ❤️🇺🇸

🇺🇸 VFW Post 2245 and Grayslake American Legion Post 659 were proud to help lead the parade into downtown Grayslake with our color guard, and it was especially meaningful to do so during the USA 250 celebration for Grayslake Summerfest.

We were also proud to see Navy Band Great Lakes marching through downtown and helping make the celebration even more special with their exceptional military bearing and performance. Bravo Zulu, Shipmates. 🫡

Congratulations also to “Cyndy S”, our evening 50/50 raffle winner! 🎉 And thank you to everyone else who stopped by to purchase tickets for our summer-long annual bourbon raffle. We’ll be drawing those winners at The Vine’s Bourbon & B**r Fest in September, so stay tuned! 🥃

Days like this are a great reminder of what community is all about: showing up, serving, celebrating together, and taking pride in the place we call home. ❤️🇺🇸

Last night at our August Post Meeting, we talked about some of the great events coming up in Grayslake, including Summerfest this Saturday, the Farmer’ Market on Wednesdays, and Bourbon & B**r Fest coming soon in September.

A big part of our mission is engaging with and serving the community we call home. So while these good summer days last, make sure you stop by our tent, say hello, or come find us wherever we may be hanging out around town! 🇺🇸

But one of the highlights of last night’s meeting was hearing from a very special guest, Eddie McCabe from Boy Scouts Troop 96, Grayslake, IL, who presented his Eagle Scout Service Project to our Post.

Eddie is leading a fence project benefiting Lake County Haven, which serves women and children experiencing homelessness and provides them with the support and resources needed to rebuild their lives. Eddie proudly walked our members through his plans, the work involved, and why he chose this project.

After hearing his presentation, our Post proudly voted to contribute $600 toward his Eagle Scout project. ❤️

The Eagle Scout Service Project is the culmination of years of growth, leadership, service, and dedication in Scouting. It requires a Scout to plan, develop, and lead a project that benefits the community, and we were incredibly impressed by Eddie’s initiative and commitment to making a difference.

Thank you, Eddie, for coming to speak with us and for allowing VFW Post 2245 to play a small part in your project. We commend your dedication to Scouting, your leadership, and most importantly, your willingness to serve others.

This afternoon, rain or shine, our Post 2245 Comrades gathered at Jones Island for an intimate Celebration of Life honoring our dear friend and fellow comrade, Vietnam Army Veteran Al Sparrow.

One of the tenets of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Charter is to perpetuate the memory and history of our dead and to assist their widows and orphans. It is a responsibility we hold close to our hearts, and being there to support the Sparrow family during this time was a true honor.

Al’s service to our nation and his friendship within our Post will never be forgotten. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones as we continue to honor his legacy.

Never Forgotten. Always Remembered.

Today, members of VFW Post 2245 spent some time at Grayslake Memorial Park doing something that our Commander, Michael Magnetta, has envisioned since taking command of our Post.

Thanks to the generosity of the Christian Family, beautiful poppy flowers were donated and planted around our Veterans monument. While a small plant today, in the years to come these poppies 🌺 will grow and bloom as a living reminder of the 19 Grayslake heroes whose names are etched on the monument and of all those who gave their all for our nation. 🇺🇸

Since the days of Flanders Field, the poppy has stood as a symbol of remembrance and sacrifice. Commander Mike has long dreamed of creating a small “Flanders Field” of our own here in Grayslake, and today we took the first step toward making that vision a reality. Though we planted only a few, we hope to continue adding to them in the years ahead.

We are grateful to Comrade Mike Christian and his family, who donated these beautiful flowers and to all our comrades who spent the morning helping perpetuate the memory of our fallen brothers and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Their legacy lives on.
