HBM Malawi

The young man you see marked in the picture is Oswell from Karonga, where I stayed before coming here.

Oswell comes from a Muslim family and background. He received Christ and has been going through discipleship since 2025. This year, after the National Conference in May, he was given a Bible.

Three weeks ago, Oswell surprised me by sending USD 11—not because I had asked him for anything, but simply as a way of expressing appreciation for the work God had done in his life through our ministry.

Then, two days ago, he called me again, not to ask for anything, but simply to share what the Lord continues to do in his life. He told me about the people he is now discipling and how God is using him to reach and encourage many others.

This is what makes discipleship so beautiful. We invest in one life, and God can use that one life to reach many more. Oswell is now becoming a disciple-maker himself.

All glory to God for what He has done, what He is doing, and what He will continue to do through Oswell. 🙏

It is with very heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our dear brother and friend, Matthew Daka, National Administrator of Hope Builders Ministries Zambia.

For more than two decades, Matthew and I served the Lord together. He was far more than a ministry partner—he was my brother, my friend, and the man I trusted to represent HBM's work in Zambia. I have often said, “Matthew was me in Zambia, and I represented him in the USA.”

Matthew loved the Lord, loved his family, and gave himself faithfully to the work God entrusted to him. His influence is seen today in the many pastors, disciple-makers, and churches he helped start and strengthen throughout Zambia.

Our hearts are broken, but we are grateful for the years God gave us with this faithful servant.

Please pray for Matthew’s family, his church, and the entire HBM Zambia family in the days ahead.

Well done, Matthew. You will be greatly missed. Maranatha!

All packed up and returning to Texas and my sweet wife. Three weeks. It’s been very good. Very fruitful. Thank you for your prayers and support.

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we traveled into the rural areas to visit some of the different churches. Some small (9) and poor, very rural. Another very rural, grass church structure, vibrant, about 70. And finally, 70 miles to Lizulu and Pastor Samuel with 180 attending. Border town with Mozambique. Vibrant, lots of men! Well taught yet still suffering the “prosperity” virus. I taught the main service and then about 100 remained for another hour teaching on Disciple making.

Today, our HBM Malawi conference drew to a close, marked by a profound sense of community and spiritual growth. Eighteen members of the HBM mission team in Malawi, who are tirelessly making disciples and advancing Christ's Gospel, were in attendance, with 4 others regrettably absent, and we're thankful for the generous support that made this possible, including 200 Bibles, 5 smartphones, and 2 bicycles.

Hey all. Thank you for the happy birthday wishes! I celebrated my 73rd bday in Zambia. I am in Malawi now. Praise the Lord we can serve Jesus until we see Him face to Face!

ZAMBIA. We have concluded the conference with 42 HBMZ leaders, 2 leaders from Zimbabwe, and 4 from DRC.
HBM CEO, Lawrence Gunnells, built camaradarie, unity of mission, and a deeper love and appreciation for one another. The Gospel of Grace was emphasized. The strategic value of multiplying disciples was reinforced.

I taught on the believer’s position in Christ and the importance of knowing this solid, unchanging truth. So that we can practice our position and experience the “all spiritual blessings” given to all believers by the grace of God in Christ. I also taught on the distinction between the Church and the coming Kingdom defining our mission until the rapture of the Church.

The Zambia leaders reported over 8,000 one-on-three disciple makers groups were actively functioning. Praise the Lord. That means there is a potential for 24,000 more groups by next year.

The HBM MISSION is growing by God’s grace and to His glory and the advancement of the Gospel until He calls us to Himself. Praise the Lord.
