Some ideas never grow old. In Ancient Greece, Heraclitus proposed that the fundamental principle defining our existence is the interplay of light and shadow, for shadow requires light to exist. Cosmic unity is both our origin and our destiny. We are connected, not separate, bound together inextricably. The more intimate we become with the characteristics, propensities, and possible interpretations of light and dark, the more we learn about ourselves and the world around us. The dialogue between us expands.

This themed exhibition will be juried by distinguished local artist, Michel Demetria Touris and will feature the very best work of the nearly-300 member PSA.

Michel studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Fleisher in Philadelphia, and holds a Masters in Educational Psychology from Duquesne University.

All events are free and open to the public.

This past Saturday afternoon, May 9th, the Pittsburgh Society of Artists held its General Meeting. It was a wonderful opportunity for artist members to connect, attend a presentation by Mark Rengers, welcome new faces, and review the latest Board updates including upcoming exhibitions and events.

Mark Rengers (photo 2) delivered a highly engaging presentation to the group. The talk focused on the realities of building a sustainable creative life and what he learned through years of custom framing, gallery work, artist relationships, and collector interactions. Follow for upcoming shows and artists talks and/or website www.markrengersgallery.com to sign up for their newsletter.

We were excited to meet 5 of our new members at the meeting:
- Lance Maloney, who is an oil/acrylic painter of people, still-life and landscape, and also creates with digital medium.
- Sue Masley shared her fantastic figure artwork - she had a teaching career and is a watercolorist of figure-drawings and portraiture. (Photos 3 & 4)
- Ari Wulff originally from Cleveland, attended Penn State University and Cooper School of Art. She went into the graphics field professionally, and enjoys doing

Consistency in style and medium allows an artist to showcase their talents in the particular area in which they are most accomplished.

VISUAL INTEREST: Visual interest is evaluated by looking at the strength of the work based on the elements and principles of art and design.

CONTENT: The work is examined with an eye towards originality, expression and meaning.

CRAFTSMANSHIP: Craftsmanship is rated according to the skill and degree of quality in the work and presentation.

Last Saturday, November 8th, 2025, we held our General Meeting and celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists. It was such an exciting afternoon filled with fun activities, an interactive Art Trivia Game, and a Gift Exchange; we invited our members to take a stroll down memory lane as we discussed how PSA was formed in 1965 and went over some of the highlights over the past six decades, while, of course, indulging in some Birthday cake! A very special Thank You to Kara Snyder and Marlene Boas for organizing such a lively celebration!

We were also eager to welcome our New Members who recently joined our creative community; they each introduced themselves, presenting one of their pieces and sharing with us about their inspiration and process. How fascinating!

Finally, we held a brief board meeting with all PSA members present, where we discussed the future of PSA. We are thrilled to welcome two new board members: Stephanie Lantzy, who is filling the position of Programs Chair, and Sarah Hunter, who is now Vice-President.

Art and Poetry fused together to create a magical evening at the Closing Reception of the Pittsburgh Society of Artists 59th Annual!

PSA collaborated with the Pittsburgh Poets for an Ekphrastic Poetry Reading which took place on Saturday night at Stifel Fine Arts Center.

There was a great atmosphere in the gallery while artists and poets gathered to celebrate! Many thanks To our Exhibition Co-Chairs: Paula Martino and Andy Spanoudakis for their unwavering commitment. Thank you also to the staff of the Stifel Fine Arts Center for providing such a beautiful space. A special shout-out to Alyssa Sineni — who is a PSA member and also a member of the Pittsburgh Poetry Exchange. Alyssa tirelessly worked at streamlining and organizing last night‘s poetry reading. And, thanks To PSA volunteers including Martha Skarlinski, Jannick Wildberg and Craig Marcus for their help with transporting artwork and helping to publicize the event. Last, but certainly not least, a huge dose of gratitude for all of the participating artists for sharing their vision and talent with us!

Also… Congratulations to Olena Abakumova for her Stifel Fine Arts Center people's choice award!
