"LEP individuals face significant barriers in applying for social safety net programs without adequate language assistance.Even when translations of applications are available, the translation may be overly complex or may lack cultural competency, causing applicants difficulty in understanding it.177 For example, a study of Spanish translations of Medicaid applications in 37 states and D.C. found that on average the translated documents required an 11th-12th grade reading level to understand, while best practices suggest documents should be readable at or below a 6th
grade level."

When ICE agents pull into La Placita strip mall, a gathering place for day laborers in Brentwood and a hot spot for immigration raids, the men hoping to get hired run inside the stores and lock the doors behind them.

Anti-ICE activists often show up to explain their rights to the men and hand out whistles to blow if agents are seen on the hunt. And afterward, business plummets throughout the mall. On a recent morning, one restaurant owner there looked out despondently at just two customers having breakfast.
A year and a half into what President Donald Trump says will be the largest deportation campaign in the nation's history, such scenes are now part of everyday life in Brentwood. The most heavily Latino community in New York State, at 76%, has been forever changed.

The place where voter support for Trump doubled over the last three presidential elections has become one of the biggest targets for ICE arrests.

14 years ago, DACA opened a door for hundreds of thousands of young people to work, study, and build lives without fear of deportation.

Today, that door is under attack. Renewals delayed. Work permits in limbo. A program that was only ever meant to be temporary, still standing in for the permanent protections Congress has failed to deliver.

Right now, the House is out on recess, not scheduled to return until August 31st. When they’re back, their first order of business must be signing the Dream & Promise Act discharge petition. We need real, permanent protections.
