Support the healing of Indigenous Communities this Giving Tuesday💜

Our mission at the Metoac Indigenous Collective is to help heal the Indigenous communities of Long Island which include land, people, animal relatives, and all non-human kin. There is good work that has been and that continues to be done on a grassroots level, but that work is often under-resourced. We seek to uplift and expand upon what is already present within these communities, by fortifying the infrastructure that will increase capacity and allow for sustainability in their efforts.

Here are a few ways you can positively impact this mission:

1. Donate to M.I.C.💜 The sustainability and growth of M.I.C. relies on philanthropic funding. Gifts of all sizes to support administrative staff, general operations, equipment, etc. are essential to our team bringing our mission to fruition.

2. Donate to support an M.I.C. Initiative💜 Curriculum development, Indigenous Gardening, Wampum Belt Creation, Canoe Culture, Research Compilation, Land & Water Rematriation, and Cultural Center are all initiatives of M.I.C. These initiatives require resources, equipment, materials, partnerships, and funding. If you or someone you know has interest in supporting one of these initiatives, please contact our team or donate today!

3. Become an M.I.C. Community Partner💜 Collaboration and partnership is a core value and priority of M.I.C. Building a strong community of value-aligned partners is an integral part of how we realize our mission. If you’d like to become a community partner, reach out to our team at [email protected].

Today we honor the lives of all those who serve, and have served, to protect our land and country. We honor you for your commitment, sacrifices, and contributions.

Native Americans serve the U.S. military at higher rates per capita than any other ethnic group and have served in every major U.S. war since the Revolutionary War. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, about 19% of Native Americans have served in the military. Native American women also serve at a higher rates than any other demographic of female service members. Currently, there are more than 150,000 Native American veterans living in the United States.

We honor our ancestors and relatives for their bravery in protecting our homelands despite enduring adversity and historical injustices.

Acknowledging Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not revisionist history. Instead it is an opportunity to educate yourselves and others about the history of Indigenous peoples and correct false narratives. It is an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous resilience, heritage, sovereignty, and determination.

Ways to celebrate Indigenous People:

1) Be a proud ally and share a post commemorating the holiday.

2) Donate to Indigenous-led nonprofit organizations.

3) Support Indigenous-owned businesses.

4) Buy books from Indigenous authors.

5) Learn about the ancestral territories on which you reside and educate yourself about the their communities.

6) Learn about issues that are important to Indigenous people and join their movements.

7) Respect our Mother Earth and honor our kinship with land and all of creation.

September 30th is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. This day of memorial is dedicated to recognizing the atrocities of the residential boarding school systems in Canada and the United States and the generational traumas endured due to the heinous acts inflicted on Indigenous children.

The residential board school system, government funded and primarily run by churches, was a weapon of forced assimilation and cultural genocide. Indigenous children were forcibly removed from their families and communities with the intention to eliminate their cultural identities, language, and traditions. Indigenous children endured poor living conditions, sexual and physical abuse, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, and death. Some reports concluded that residential schools had mortality rates of 30%. Many deaths were not reported, many children were buried in unmarked graves, and those who went missing were rarely searched for.

Orange Shirt Day was established and inspired by residential school survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad. She shared the story of her grandmother buying her an orange shirt to wear on her first day at the residential school. Upon her arrival to the school, the orange shirt and her clothing was stripped from her. The orange shirt has become a symbol of recognition of all the children who endured the residential boarding school system, all that was stripped away from them, and all the children who never returned home.

Today we welcome the Autumn Equinox🍂 A time where day and night are equal, reminding us of the importance of balance. The changing of the seasons reminds us that all life moves in cycles and that we too should move with the rhythm of nature.

As the daylight grows shorter and nights longer, we begin to prepare ourselves for the colder days ahead. We begin to prepare ourselves for a season of introspection. As the trees begin to shed their leaves, we too should let go of all that is no longer serving us.

Nunnowa is a season of gratitude. We take the time to give thanks for our Mother Earth and for all she continues to provide us. We give thanks for the bounty of the harvest season. We give thanks to the land, water, all of creation🙏

This month our Co-Founder/ Director of Communications & Outreach Bianca Collins traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to attend the Land Trust Alliance’s National Rally Conference. Land trusts, land conservation organizations, Indigenous-led organizations, and representatives gathered from across the country to discuss and learn how to empower their work regarding land and water conservation while centering partnerships.

Over the last four years, the Land Trust Alliance( LTA) has made a public commitment to the inclusion of Indigenous peoples, knowledge, and expertise within their mission. Understanding that this space has not always been inclusive nor historically recognized the inherent relationship Indigenous people have to this land, we are appreciative that the LTA has prioritized partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations while also providing a platform for Indigenous people to educate others. Through these efforts, the LTA has incorporated an Indigenous Summit in their annual Rally Conference creating a space for Indigenous people to gather and strengthen relationships. In addition, numerous Indigenous-led panel discussions and educational workshops have been hosted throughout the conference. This is certainly a necessary step in the right direction.

The success of land and water conservation work depends on the leadership of Indigenous peoples, communities and allied partnerships. M.I.C looks forward to being in continued partnership with the Land Trust Alliance as well as those who protect and steward the lands and waters of our sacred Mother Earth🌎

Tabutne to all who have been a part of this work, for your representation and advocacy!

Today and every day we honor and celebrate Indigenous women worldwide. Our land defenders, water carriers, life bringers, and the backbones of our communities and families. Their roles are vital to protecting and instilling cultural lifeways throughout generations. Indigenous women, you are loved, you are valued, you are respected, you are powerful, and you are sacred!
