National Labor Day
GFWC encourages clubwomen to support members of the country’s workforce. Celebrate the people who hold some of our most important jobs.
A bit of history regarding GFWC’s impact:
1898: GFWC unanimously passed a resolution against child labor. With the help of clubwoman Jane Addams (1860-1935), child labor became a major area of concern for the Federation. In 1901, Addams headed the Federation’s Child Labor Committee to work for the maintenance and improvement of child labor laws.
1910s: GFWC supported legislation for the eight-hour workday, workplace safety and inspection, and workmen’s compensation.
1925: GFWC initiated a nationwide Federation survey of the American home, which placed a spotlight on the status of technology in the home. The survey led to the inclusion of homemaker as an occupation on the 1930 United States Census.

September is National Preparedness Month ~ No matter where you live, you are subject to disasters. Natural disasters and man-made disasters affect everyone and cause severe damage and endanger lives. Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, landslides, wildfires, hot spells, or cold spells are all natural disasters that can be deadly to people and property. Man-made disasters such as terrorism, crime, power outages, famines, or war are just as terrifying as natural disasters. Therefore, preparation is essential for the safety of you and your family. It can also ensure valuable personal possessions are taken care of properly before you lose them.

September is Su***de Prevention Month ~ We Can All Help Prevent Su***de
The 988 Lifeline network and its partners are working to change the conversation from su***de-to-su***de prevention, to actions that can promote healing, help and give hope. See these wonderful tips from the 998 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline.
• Ask ~ Research shows people who are having thoughts of su***de feel relief when someone asks after them in a caring way. Findings suggest acknowledging and talking about su***de may reduce rather than increase suicidal ideation.
• Be There ~ Individuals are more likely to feel less depressed, less suicidal, less overwhelmed, and more hopeful after speaking to someone who listens without judgment.
• Keep Them Safe ~ A number of studies have indicated that when lethal means are made less available or less deadly, su***de rates by that method decline, and frequently su***de rates overall decline.
• Help Them Stay Connected ~ Studies indicate that helping someone at risk create a network of resources and individuals for support and safety can help them take positive action and reduce feelings of hopelessness.
• Follow Up ~ Studies have also shown that brief, low-cost intervention and supportive, ongoing contact may be an important part of su***de prevention, especially for individuals after they have been discharged from hospitals or care services.

From Asbestos to Approval
GFWC Auburn Junior Woman’s Club
Auburn's Fire Chief met with the club to provide the rationale for a long overdue new Fire
Headquarters and the approval for the funding that would appear on the Town Meeting ballot. Originally constructed as an elementary school, the fire department consistently deals with issues such as aging pipes, HVAC, ventilation issues, restroom facilities, and biohazard concerns. A question-and-answer period followed the presentation, enabling members to “spread the word, " resulting in overwhelming approval for the funding.

Women’s History and Resource Center ~ WHRC
Incredible Women of Northboro
The GFWC Northboro Junior Woman’s Club
The club hosted a celebration, The Incredible Women of Northboro, for Women’s History
Month. Through social media and the newspaper, community members were invited to nominate women who make Northboro a better place to live. The committee planned to nominate five women but decided to honor all 23 deserving nominees. Each walked a red carpet with her nominator and was honored with a proclamation and a donation to Abby’s House, a shelter for women.

A Royal Tea Party Fit for a Queen
GFWC Millbury Woman’s Club
The GFWC Millbury Women’s Club hosted a proper English tea that featured a very talented local actress in a one-woman show, Her Majesty, the Queen. Attendees were treated to The Mayfair, a signature drink named for the birthplace of Queen Elizabeth II. Donated teacups were used to serve the tea, and then each attendee was given her teacup as a favor. In addition to ticket sales, the club boosted profits with a Grand Raffle of donated prizes.

Leadership and Legacy in Needham
Needham Woman’s Club
A fifty-year tradition of service clubs collaborating to share ideas, best practices, and strategies for community events continues to thrive. On a rotating basis, clubs host dinners, inviting participation and open exchange. Members share activities to avoid duplication and strengthen mutual support. Expanding this effort, clubs united to collect items for a local nonprofit, transforming a networking event into a collective act of service—demonstrating the power and impact of working together.
