Straughn Fire/Rescue

Straughn Fire was toned out lastnight Friday the 2nd at midnight for an unknown accident at the 132 mile marker of I-70. Upon arrival Engine 91 found that a semi had ran off of the road and ran through a fence with minimal damage. I-70 represents a different set of dangers/risks than anywhere else due to traffic speed and volume, if you see flashing lights please slow down and pull over if possible. We appreciate our firefighters responding at all times during the day and night. We are proud to serve all of Dudley township and those that call upon us in their time of need.

We will always be greatful for you Ron, you were an inspiration to so many. Our brother forever and always. We know you are riding in the best seat....backseat, listening to the radio traffic, gloving up, preparing to once again give all you've got and be the Jake you were meant to be carrying the pipe through the structure. Until we meet again, we love and miss you.

Today we remember and honor Assistant Chief Ronald Derrickson of the Straughn Fire Department, who made the ultimate sacrifice on this date in 2021.
The Indiana Fire & Public Safety Academy respectfully recognizes this firefighter’s service and the legacy they left of serving their community and fellow Hoosiers.
Never forgotten.

👨‍🚒🔥🔥New ideas, new insight, one step added at a time for each training, putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Members from Straughn Volunteer Fire Department, Lewisville/Franklin Township Fire Dept. and a couple others partook in a simulated 2nd story fire today. Due to the nature of a second story fire crews had to learn to properly advance hose by trial and error, communication, and pre-loading. To little hose and you find yourself getting hot quick, to much hose and you have yourself a congested hallway. We are very thankful for instructors from Rushville Township Vol Fire Dept, Vernon Township Fire Department taking their time to help have a new set of eyes, ideas, tactics, and trying new things. We are blessed to serve all of Dudley township and all who call upon us in their time of need.

The difference between doing and wanting to do is very simple yet the importance of that difference is overlooked so often. A couple members from Straughn traveled to Versailles to participate in a training to better their skills at being a nozzleman. The members weren't asked nor forced to attend this. At Straughn we do our best to have members "buy in" or fall in love with the skill sets and fire service itself. This proves we are slowly getting that buy in and with that being said we thank our firefighters for doing what they promised and that is constantly learning and bettering themselves to protect Dudley township and all who call upon us in their time of need.

Today we remember Firefighter Sergio G. Villanueva, FDNY Ladder 132, who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

Sergio was 33 years old. Born in Argentina, he came to the United States as a young child and eventually dedicated his life to public service. Before joining the FDNY in 2000, Sergio served for eight years as a New York City police officer.

Sergio was known as a passionate soccer player, a talented cook, and a man who loved his family, friends and fiancée, Tanya. Just two days before September 11, he scored the winning goal for the FDNY Soccer Club in a 1–0 victory.

On the morning of September 11, Sergio and the members of Ladder 132 responded to the World Trade Center. He entered the towers to help those who were trapped and never came home. Seven members of his firehouse were lost that morning.

Sergio’s life was about more than the day he died. He was a son, brother, fiancé, friend, firefighter and police officer who dedicated his life to helping others.

We remember his courage.
We remember his sacrifice.
We remember his life.

!!!65-75 pounds, thats how much fire gear and an air pack add extra to your weight on top of retaining your body heat!!! 16 of the students in the Henry county Fire 1/2 class had their first hands on for fire training today! The realization of finally being out of hazmatt is official! The students went over everything from their gear and the maintenence, why/how, disassembling/assembling, and gear cleaning. After that students went into the proper way of don/doffing gear and after that went through multiple obstacles, searches, and drills just to become accustomed to their gear. Students then donned their airpacks and went through the obstacles again and ended the day with 3 separate teams searching in NO VISIBILITY conditions implemented by a fog machine searching for training dummies that may or may not be there. Students are from Straughn, Lewisville/Franklin Township Fire Dept. knightstown, posey township, fairland, spiceland, prairie township, if I forgot any I apologize. We couldnt ask for a better group, they work well together and are forming bonds. Only 2 more months and you guys are done! Also a large thankyou to our instructors that keep making time for the future.
