Happy Purple Heart Day!

Historical Significance

August 7, 1782: General George Washington established the Badge of Military Merit, the original precursor to the Purple Heart. It was created to honor soldiers for “any singularly meritorious action” during the Revolutionary War.

Though only a few were awarded at the time, the badge symbolized Washington’s desire to recognize valor among enlisted troops.

Evolution of the Award

The decoration fell into disuse until February 22, 1932 (Washington’s 200th birthday), when General Douglas MacArthur revived it as the Purple Heart, now awarded to those wounded or killed in combat.

The modern observance of National Purple Heart Day began in 2014, and August 7 was chosen to commemorate the original date of Washington’s creation of the badge.
