The Illinois Masonic Student Assistance Program (IMSAP) trains educators to recognize the warning signs early, from substance use and bullying to depression and family instability, so kids get help before crisis hits.

Brother Mark Carlen of Toledo Lodge No. 834 lives in Oklahoma, hundreds of miles from his hometown. When his nephew Marshall decided to join the fraternity, distance could have meant Brother Carlen missed every milestone.

Instead, Toledo Lodge secretary Jeff Decker made sure he didn't miss a thing. Brother Decker sent the dates of Marshall's Entered Apprentice and Fellow Craft degrees, along with photos as he progressed. When it came time for the Master Mason raising, Brother Decker had quietly arranged with the Worshipful Master for Brother Carlen to take part in the degree itself.

"It was a moment I will always appreciate and never forget," Brother Carlen said. "A true brotherly love experience."

In 2024, Brother James Mabey of Normal Lodge No. 673 had a stroke. Failing eyesight and mobility forced him into retirement, and the cost of relocating for treatment left his family underwater.

He reached out to the Grand Lodge of Illinois A.F. & A.M., unsure what to expect. Our Illinois Masonic Outreach Services (IMOS) fully covered his relocation, lifting the financial weight at one of the hardest moments of his life.

When a stroke left Brother Mabey underwater financially, his Illinois Freemasonry family stepped in. No questions asked. Illinois Masonic Outreach Services (IMOS) stepped in and fully covered his relocation for treatment, lifting the financial weight at one of the hardest moments of his life.

"The love and care in Masonic interaction defies understanding," he said.

Today is Masonic Membership Visibility Day, and this year's theme is Brotherly Love = Kindness = We Care. To celebrate, we asked Illinois Freemasons one question: "When did a Brother show up for you in a way you'll never forget?"
