SNAP FUNDING CUTS have severely affected local families and children and The Well Outreach is seeing HUGE serving increases because of it.

So many families and Seniors have lost snap funding and this also directly affects children, and if they are eligible for school lunches.

SNAP Cuts Have Statewide Impact
Between July 2025 and July 2026, 87,275 fewer people in 37,007 fewer households received SNAP, and monthly benefits fell by nearly $19.5 million statewide. What this means for families.
• About 1 in 8 Tennessee SNAP participants lost assistance. Participation declined 12.5%, from 696,791 people in July 2025 to 609,516 in July 2026. Every Tennessee county experienced a decline.
• The reduction averages approximately $526 in lost monthly grocery assistance per affected household, or $223 per person, based on the statewide change.
• For families already stretching limited incomes, losing that support means less money for nutritious food and greater pressure to choose among groceries, rent, utilities, transportation, and medication.
• Changes in SNAP participation can also affect access to free school meals because schools and districts use SNAP enrollment to directly certify children for meal assistance.
• Families who lose benefits are increasingly turning to food pantries.
• Expanded work requirements, eligibility changes, paperwork problems, and administrative errors are contributing to the decline, including some eligible households losing assistance.
• The impact reaches local communities as well. Nearly $19.5 million less in monthly SNAP benefits means considerably less spending at Tennessee grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and other food retailers.

Did you knowThe Well Outreach grows their own hydroponic lettuce in an effort to provide more fresh vegetables to our Well food pantry families?

About Our Hydroponics Program:
The Well Outreach Hydroponics Unit has been operating for approximately 2½ years and is run entirely by volunteers. Our team consists of twelve dedicated volunteers, including eleven Master Gardeners from the Maury County Master Gardener Program based in Columbia, Tennessee. Harvests take place every Monday, with five to ten volunteers typically participating each week.

System Development:
During the first two years of operation, the program utilized eight individual Fork Farms Flex Farms. In May 2026, the system was upgraded to a Fork Farms Flex Connect System, adding four additional Flex Farms and incorporating a Flex Micro unit for seed germination.
The Flex Farms and Flex Micro are located along the back wall of the pantry, allowing guests to observe the various stages of lettuce growth while visiting the facility.

Growing Process:
Hydroponic System
• 12 total growing units
• 6 farms per pump on the Flex Connect System
• 3 farms harvested each week
• 5-week growing cycle from seed to harvest
• 1 week in the Flex Micro germination unit
• 4 weeks growing in the Flex Farms

Harvest Process:
On harvest day:
1. Seedlings are transplanted into freshly cleaned and harvested farms.
2. Mature lettuce is harvested and packaged in labeled clamshell containers.
3. Approximately half of the harvest remains at The Well Outreach Food Pantry in Mt. Pleasant.
4. The remaining harvest is packaged and delivered to the sister Well Outreach Food Pantry in Spring Hill, Tennessee, where it is distributed to pantry guests.

Production and Community Impact:
Depending on the lettuce variety, the hydroponics unit produces approximately 45-58 pounds of lettuce each week from three harvested units. From January through August 2026, the program produced approximately 1,000 servings of fresh lettuce EACH MONTH, helping provide healthy, locally grown produce to families served by The Well Outreach Food Pantry network.

• Green Star
• Romaine
• Butterhead
• Summer Crisp

Community Benefit:
The Hydroponics Unit provides a consistent supply of fresh, nutritious produce to pantry guests in both Mt. Pleasant and Spring Hill while creating meaningful volunteer opportunities and showcasing sustainable food-growing practices within the community.
The visibility of the hydroponic farms inside the pantry also gives guests an opportunity to learn about modern agriculture and see food being grown throughout all stages of development.

The Well Outreach has begun its first artist partnership with renowned painter and photographer Darrell Chitty. Darrell has graciously offered to donate half of the proceeds of his commissioned paintings and photography sessions to us.

This partnership began at our 2026 Night of Hope gala and now continues beyond that event.

We invite you to explore the sampling of his gallery below and reach out to us if you are interested in having a one-of-a-kind professional portrait created.

Darrell uses both pigment inks and oils to create portraits, landscapes and scenes. Here is just a small sampling of the many works he has created.
