๐Ÿš‘ Why Does Rural EMS Matter? ๐Ÿš‘

Itโ€™s easy to look at call numbers and wonder why a rural EMS service needs ambulances, personnel, training, equipment, and funding available 24 hours a day. But emergency medicine isnโ€™t measured by how many calls happenโ€”itโ€™s measured by being ready for the one call that changes everything.

At Country Corner Fire & EMS, we may go from assisting a patient with a medical emergency at home to responding to a major vehicle accident, a drowning on the lake, cardiac arrest, stroke, severe trauma, or a child who isnโ€™t breathing at the school. Emergencies donโ€™t happen on a schedule, and they donโ€™t care whether you live in a city or a rural community.

What many people donโ€™t realize is that nearby agencies are facing record call volumes of their own. Many metropolitan and suburban EMS systems are already stretched thin and simply cannot absorb additional rural coverage areas without impacting their own communities. When emergencies happen here, our community needs local responders who are already here and ready.

Many private, for-profit ambulance services focus much of their resources on interfacility transfers because those transports often provide more predictable revenue than maintaining ambulances available for 911 emergencies. The result is that many rural communities across Oklahoma and the nation struggle to find reliable emergency coverage. Even when private coverage is available, the costs can be astronomical for residents and local governments.

That is why local EMS matters.

Rural EMS is not a business. It is a public service. It exists because communities choose to invest in having trained professionals available when seconds matter and help may be miles away.

Behind every ambulance response are thousands of dollars in medications, cardiac monitors, stretchers, radios, vehicle maintenance, insurance, fuel, training, continuing education, and lifesaving equipment. The cost of providing emergency medical services continues to rise every year. Unfortunately, those rising costs affect everyone, including the providers that have bills to pay too.

Rural EMS agencies like Country Corner Fire & EMS rely on a combination of billing revenue, grants, EMS service fees, community support, and sometimes property tax millages to remain operational. Grants help, but they are never guaranteed and cannot sustain daily operations alone. As costs increase, communities are often faced with difficult decisions about utility-based EMS fees, service fees, or tax millages to ensure emergency services remain available when needed.

No one wants to pay more. We understand that.

But when your spouse is having a heart attack, your child canโ€™t breathe, a loved one is trapped in a vehicle, someone suffers a stroke, or the drowning victim has been pulled from the water, the question isnโ€™t how much the service costs. The question is whether someone was available to answer the call, arrive QUICKLY, and provide LIFESAVING care.

You may only need EMS once in your life.

We train every day for that one moment.

Rural EMS is not measured by profits. It is not measured solely by call volume. It is measured by readiness, reliability, and our ability to be there when our community needs us most.

That is why Country Corner Fire & EMS exists.

โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿšจ HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT ๐Ÿšจโ˜€๏ธ

The National Weather Service is forecasting dangerous heat and humidity across our area through Thursday, with heat index values reaching 105โ€“110ยฐF. These conditions can quickly become dangerous for anyone spending time outdoors.

Country Corner Fire & EMS wants to remind everyone to take precautions and look out for one another during this period of extreme heat.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Heat Safety Tips:
๐Ÿ’ง Stay Hydrated โ€“ Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you donโ€™t feel thirsty. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol.

๐Ÿ  Stay Cool โ€“ Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (typically 10 AMโ€“6 PM). Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings.

๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿ‘ด Check on Vulnerable Individuals โ€“ Older adults, young children, and those with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk for heat-related illness.

๐Ÿš— Never Leave Children or Pets in a Vehicle โ€“ Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can become deadly within minutes, even with windows cracked.

๐Ÿพ Protect Your Pets โ€“ Ensure pets have shade, plenty of fresh water, and avoid walking them on hot pavement that can burn their paws.

๐Ÿ‘• Dress for the Heat โ€“ Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen.

โš ๏ธ Know the Signs of Heat Illness
