SAY Detroit, And Say Something Amazing He spent a night in a shelter to call attention to the issue.

SAY Detroit is a fully formed 501(c) (3) charity aimed at improving the lives of the neediest citizens, through shelter, food, medical care, volunteer efforts and education. It serves as the umbrella for ongoing major projects including A Time to Help, SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic, and Working Homes/Working Families. SAY Detroit was formed in February, 2006, after Mitch Albom went public with a plea to do as much for the homeless all winter as the city was doing over a Super Bowl weekend. The response was overwhelming, and SAY (Super All Year Detroit) was born. Since then, its accomplishments include:

-the nation’s first full-time medical clinic for homeless children and their mothers

-a state-of-the-art kitchen at the Michigan Veterans Foundation

-a full-time day care center for the children of homeless women who are in transition or searching for work

-Newly refurbished homes for poor but working families, that are deeded over to them after two years of occupancy

-The funding of dozens of projects for Detroit area agencies

As SAY Detroit celebrates 20 yrs of providing pathways to success for the people it serves, the McReynolds family shows what our collaboration can do.

When they moved back to Detroit and a shady deal put their housing at risk, Working Homes / Working Families restored stability. As members of SAY Play, their children thrived. Ava-Marie found her passion through art, and older brother Danzel traveled to South Africa through a partnership with PeacePlayers, coaching basketball and learning about its history. He graduated from Centerline HS this spring, and returned to SAY Play this summer as a volunteer to pay it forward.

The rain couldn’t stop these volunteers from dedicating their morning to a back-to-school cleanup at SAY Detroit Play Center, just in time for after-school programming to resume last week! The indoor team cleaned and dusted and even fixed dome broken window screens. The outdoor team tackled trash and landscaping, undeterred by the weather!

We’re doing it again on October 10th, this time at the SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic. We’re looking for volunteers to help to organize supply closets in the Clinic and help plant some mums — all part of making patients feel welcome and well cared for. The Mi-Cycle student mechanics Cam and Jesse spent this summer becoming better bicycle mechanics and ready to become student leaders in the bike clubs at their schools. They also dived deeper into bike cultures, like joining Thursday night Slow Roll! The weekly community ride through the city welcomes riders of all levels for a social spin.

🎁 It's beginning to look a lot like... the holidays??? For these A Time to Help volunteers, a summer Saturday brought early holiday joy as they helped Detroit Goodfellows package more than 3,000 dental kits for the organization’s holiday gift boxes, which will be distributed to children across Detroit his winter. Each kit includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and a healthy dental habits pamphlet.

What kind of day has it been? Do you take time to take stock of what you've learned, seen, heard? Today's support group meetup featured a "talk back" where participants shared the lessons that have resonated the most. Kathy J. loves that it's a judgment-free zone. Sharronda B. shared her brave journey through cancer, and gratitude for the encouragement she's gotten from the group. In the end, today was about celebrating community.

This week, brothers Eli and J spent 3 hours volunteering with Mi-Cycle. They helped clean bikes and do light mechanical work and when they were finished, they took home these bicycles. A learning ➡️ earning path to success (and fun!)

Moms in our program are finding ways to connect through a new outlet - . Like our meetups, this group brings new and expectant together to find supportive and sympathetic ears on issues they can all relate to. This month explored healthy relationships – the friendships that lift you up, and the need to break dysfunctional family patterns. How do you set health boundaries in your own friend/family relationships?
