The sisters were born in the Island of Brava and since leaving CaboVerde in 1979, it was their dream to be able to give something back to the Island where they spent their childhood. So from this desire came CVU and its first project, "Project Sandbox". The goal is to build at least one playground in each of the 9 inhabited Islands of Cabo Verde. Along with other dedicated members of the Cabo Verd
ean American Community they worked tirelessly to insure CVU’s success. The primary source for CVU’s funds have come from the sale of Cape Verdean foods at the CV festivals in Providence, RI and Onset, MA. Other sources include dinner and dance fundraisers, as well as the cash donations made by CVU’s supporters. In 2006, CVU received its 501(c)3 charitable status retroactive to its inception date. Project Sandbox
To build at least one playground in each of the 9 inhabited Islands of Cabo Verde. As of 2022, we have successfully installed eight Playgrounds in the Islands of Brava, Fogo, San Nicolau, Sao Vicent, Santo Antao, Santiago and Maio. The islands of Boa Vista and Sal remains. They will be completed in July 2022. This was accomplished through public donations, fundraisers and CVU members and volunteers traveling to Cabo Verde to install the playgrounds.
