Retinoblastoma is a rare cancer of the eye that strikes 250-300 children in the U.S. These kids and their families have many challenges, including protecting the child's eyes from further injury. Some of these kids are undergoing chemotherapy or other treatments to their eyes. Kids who have only one eye are eight times more likely to injure or even lose their eye. Dr. Shields was a hero to the children and families fighting retinoblastoma. May he rest in peace knowing this life’s work lives on in the children he’s saved, doctors he’s mentored and people he’s inspired.

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. Jerry A. Shields, Director Emeritus of the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital, on June 22, 2025.

Dr. Shields was a pioneer in the field of ocular oncology, with a profound and lasting impact on the care and outcomes of children with . He introduced radioactive plaque therapy to the United States and, alongside his wife and partner Dr. Carol Shields, advanced life- and vision-saving treatments for young children around the world.

Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Shields authored more than 2,000 papers, 575 textbook chapters, and 14 books. He mentored over 150 fellows—many of whom now lead ocular oncology centers across the globe—and delivered more than 1,600 invited lectures. He was also a founding member of the International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO), which now spans more than 500 members worldwide.

Dr. Shields will be dearly missed by the global retinoblastoma and ocular oncology communities. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched: through compassionate care, groundbreaking research, and his unwavering dedication to children with eye cancer.

One of the most special parts of guest speaking for the CT Lions Club meeting was meeting Mrs. Susan Gabriele and the touching gesture that came next. She was truly inspired by the stories of resilience of these amazing “little heroes”. She made a donation to our organization in loving memory of her son in law’s mother, Barbara Haydasz. Mrs. Haydasz lived a long, loving and full life, including successful professions in nursing and teaching future nurses at the college level. We’re honored and look forward to buying the next pair of glasses for a child fighting retinoblastoma, in Mrs. Haydasz’s memory. 💓

I greatly appreciated the opportunity to be the guest speaker at a CT Lions Club meeting in Tolland. Thank you for letting me share our story and mission to spread awareness about retinoblastoma and help kids fighting Rb get the protective glasses they need. I met wonderful people who are leaders of community and humanitarian service. This work includes helping thousands of children gain access to vision health.
It was my honor to speak to the following Lions Clubs: Bloomfield, Bolton Regional, Columbia, Coventry, East Hartford, Glastonbury Centennial, Manchester, Somers, South Windsor, Stafford, Tolland and Vernon Rockville.
Special thanks to Bill Wilson.
