Today, CADRE mourns the passing of Dolores Huerta: organizer, teacher, ally, and friend of our movement.

In 2019, CADRE was honored to present our Ally Award to Dolores and her daughter, Camila Chavez, of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. We recognized them for bringing the fight to end the school-to-prison pipeline to South Kern County and for co-anchoring the Central Valley region of the Dignity in Schools Campaign California. Through that work, Dolores stood shoulder to shoulder with parents and students from South LA to the Central Valley, insisting that every child has the human right to an education with dignity. Her life affirms what CADRE parents know: those most affected by injustice hold the power to change it.

Her life reminds us of what we believe at CADRE, the people most impacted by injustice have the power to change it. Farmworkers, parents, caregivers, and everyday people who were told to wait their turn organized instead, and their collective power reshaped what justice looks like in this country.

To Camila, the Huerta family, and the entire Dolores Huerta Foundation community: we hold you in our hearts.

Descanse en poder, Dolores. Thank you for teaching generations of us to organize, to persist, and to believe.

It is with full hearts and deep gratitude that CADRE remembers Yvonne Green Caldwell — known to so many of us simply as Ms. Green. For nearly two decades, she was woven into the very fabric of this organization: a parent leader, an organizer, a teacher, a friend, and, to many of us, a mother in every sense but blood.

Ms. Green was a woman of deep and abiding faith who never stopped believing in the power of community. She valued education above almost everything else. She was known throughout CADRE as a loving and dedicated grandparent and parent leader, one who kept our organizing team — and our core parent cohort — on their toes. She upheld Black and Brown solidarity as a living practice, engaging Latino parents and grandparents with the same warmth and wisdom she offered everyone else. She listened. She shared. She showed up.

We will miss the rides, the conversations, the laughter, the questions, and her unwavering will to keep pushing forward — for her family, for her community, and for every child whose future she believed in. On behalf of the entire CADRE family: rest well, Ms. Green. And keep pushing us from above.
