In the Santa Cruz Mountains, pumas are genetically isolated, threatening the population’s survival. Transportation corridors fragment wildlife habitat, creating barriers to movement, preventing pumas from mating with neighbouring populations. Signs of inbreeding have been documented, and as a result, pumas were recently granted permanent protection under the CA Endangered Species Act.

Still, misinformation is widespread, with claims that more puma sightings mean there’s population growth. NOTE- sightings don’t reflect population size. Increases in sightings are due to increased use of security (e.g., ring, nest) cameras. Since 2007, Felidae’s Bay Area Puma Project has been collecting data to better understand how this large carnivore is adapting to increasing urban encroachment while finding ways to promote human-wildlife coexistence.
