After fleeing violence in the Democratic Republic of , Léo lost much of his mobility and struggled to move independently.

In North Kivu, our teams work directly with people in need. Identified by community liaisons—residents trained by HI—Léo received a home visit from HI's physical therapists who assessed his needs. He then participated in sessions where he learned to use crutches and regained his strength and confidence.

Now, Léo travels to his appointments on his own and even helps connect others in his community to HI's services! 🤝

Last year, Anatolii had just stepped outside his home in to close his gate when a drone appeared and immediately dropped a munition.

Anatolli was severely injured by the shapnel. One of his legs is now shorter than the other, which has caused spinal curvature and makes walking and working difficult. Today, he participates in sessions with HI to improve his mobility and regain his independence.

"As an athlete, I've always known how to train through pain," Anatolli shares. "Now, every step is a different kind of competition — a daily battle to move, to work, and to reclaim the man I was before the strike."

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Ndéye Dagué Guèye.

Her voice, always guided by solidarity, dignity, and social justice, helped advance our mission with both conviction and compassion.

Ndéye Dagué Guèye left a lasting mark on our organization and on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her. Her commitment and dedication to human rights will remain a source of inspiration for us all. Our deepest sympathies go out to her family, her loved ones, and all those who shared her journey. 💙

In a counseling room in North Kivu, , Pierrette Mwanza Sivyatsomana listens as people displaced by conflict speak about what they have lived through.

As one of HI's psychologists, she supports people who have been forced to flee their homes, many carrying the emotional weight of violence and displacement long after they arrive somewhere safer.

In just over a year, our teams have helped more than 1,000 people access psychosocial care, while providing nearly 450 awareness sessions focused on mental health and wellbeing.

Earlier this year, passed over the northern part of , damaging homes, destroying crops, and affecting over 200,000 people.

HI teams responded immediately, providing cash assistance to help survivors meet their most urgent needs and training partners in disability-inclusive emergency response.

When climate strike, people with disabilities too often face barriers accessing aid and support. HI is working to ensure that no one is left behind — both now and in future emergencies.
