Court Watch Montgomery

Court Watch Montgomery We advocate for ongoing systemic change for domestic violence survivors. Over 50 volunteers are identifying good and bad aspects of protective order hearings.

Then we report to judges and court administrators about changes that will improve safety and strengthen orders. Judges are listening! We've significantly improved safety at the courthouse, respect for victims and strengthened protective orders. We impartially monitor judges, interpreters, bailiffs, deputies and clerks. Most recommendations cost nothing and don't take a lot more of the judges' time.

Court Watch Montgomery Welcomes New Executive Director, Alana C. Brown!

The Board of Court Watch Montgomery is thrilled to announce that Alana C. Brown will be our next Executive Director. Alana has more than ten years’ experience advocating for survivors of domestic violence as a non-profit founder, executive and practicing attorney. She was recognized as a Washingtonian of the Year in 2022 and was named a National Bar Association "40 Under 40." She is the founder and former executive director of The Safe Sisters Circle, a DC-based nonprofit that has now provided hundreds of Black women survivors with legal and trauma-informed counseling services. We are confident that Alana will bring the same passion and expertise to further the mission of Court Watch Montgomery.

Alana is a DMV native who attended NYU for college and Georgetown University for law school. After law school, she worked as a prosecutor in New York, where her portfolio included pursuing justice for domestic violence survivors. Disturbed by the lack of support for survivors in her hometown area, Alana was driven to start a nonprofit to help fill the gaps, primarily in DC’s Wards 7 and 8. Alana built The Safe Sisters Circle into a thriving support organization and became a national voice for Black women survivors of domestic violence.

📢 Community Connect Event 📢

Our last two reports on protective order outcomes revealed a troubling trend: many domestic violence victims in Montgomery County seeking protective orders are forced to face the courts alone, without legal or advocacy support. This leaves victims vulnerable and underserved in their time of greatest need.

Join us TODAY for our Community Connect event featuring Sara B. Tennen, Executive Director of the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project, who will discuss how her organization is expanding support for domestic violence victims in Montgomery County. Learn about the critical resources and legal assistance being made available to those seeking protective orders.
