Hector is an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran who was deported to Mexico after his service. While living in Tijuana, he discovered dozens of other deported veterans and created the Deported Veterans Support House to provide shelter, community, and hope.
After years of advocacy, Hector became one of the first deported veterans to return to the U.S. as a citizen in 2018. Today, he continues to fight for justice for deported veterans around the world.
His story is powerful, urgent, and deeply connected to this year’s theme: Examining the Criminalization of Immigrants in America.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Sgt. Gonell arrived in New York City as a young boy who spoke no English and carried two small bags—and a determination that would shape the rest of his life. Despite early hardship, he excelled academically, made the Dean’s List, and chose a life of service to the country that gave him opportunity.
He served 545 days in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom II, rising to Staff Sergeant before joining the U.S. Capitol Police in 2006. On January 6, 2021, he stood on the front lines defending lawmakers, staff, and the democratic process, sustaining injuries that ended his 17‑year career.
Today, Sgt. Gonell is a powerful advocate for democracy, public safety, immigrant communities, and the well‑being of law enforcement officers and veterans. His story embodies the very heart of this year’s theme: Examining the Criminalization of Immigrants in America.
