Changes in sleep, behavior, or familiar routines can be early signs of canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome, often called dog dementia. Until now, veterinarians around the world have lacked a consistent approach for recognizing and tracking the condition.

Led by Dr. Natasha Olby, an international team developed the first standardized guidelines for diagnosis and monitoring. The recommendations help veterinarians identify the condition sooner, distinguish it from other causes, and follow its progression over time.

For researchers, consistent definitions make it easier to compare studies and evaluate potential treatments.

For families, that means more informed conversations about their dog’s care.

It is a discovery that provides clarity today while laying the groundwork for better research and future treatments tomorrow.
