Veterinarians regularly ask whether elective surgeries are safe before heartworm treatment, and whether any specific anesthetic precautions are needed.

Our just-published study of more than 1,000 shelter dogs with Class 1 and 2 heartworm disease showed that protocolized, high-volume spay-neuter prior to melarsomine treatment was safe.

There were no deaths and only 3 (0.3%) perioperative cardiorespiratory complications - even these were not conclusively attributable to heartworm disease and resolved with limited intervention.

Performing spay/neuter surgery prior to melarsomine adulticide treatment can reduce the length of shelter stay in treatment protocols designed for efficiency and high cure rates.

We’re excited to offer $25 cat spay and neuter surgeries at our Hayward location on:

These special clinic dates are available to residents of:

Bayfield County
Sawyer County
Rusk County
Burnett County

These counties have been identified as areas with lower access to affordable veterinary care, and thanks to several generous recent grants, we’re able to help bridge that gap.

Cost: $25 per cat

Your $25 payment helps reserve your appointment, and grant funding will cover the remaining cost of the spay or neuter surgery.

Proof of Residency Required

When registering, please upload a current utility bill showing your name and address in Bayfield, Sawyer, Rusk, or Burnett County. You can upload the bill as one of the files during the registration process.

Important Appointment Information:

- Appointments are for cats only.
- Space is limited and appointments will be filled based on availability.
- The $25 payment is nonrefundable and is required to reserve your appointment.
- Please make sure you are able to attend the date you select before registering.
- All cats must be current on their FVRCP vaccine unless they are feral. Information regarding vaccine requirements can be found on our website.

We still want to help. These $25 clinics are possible because the grant funding is specifically designated for communities with limited access to affordable veterinary care. Purple Cat Vet’s regular spay/neuter pricing remains intentionally low-cost and affordable, and our normal clinics are available to cat owners from other communities.

❤️🐾 5 YEARS. 🐾❤️

Five years of clinics. 💉🐶🐱

Five years of growing, learning, changing, improving, crying, laughing, sweating, hauling supplies, solving problems on the fly… and coming home completely exhausted and basically passing out. 😂😴

But today? Today was one of my favorite clinics we’ve ever done. 🥹❤️

We got these pictures back 📸 and looking through them just made my heart so incredibly happy. ❤️😭

THIS is what five years of building relationships in a community looks like. 🏡🤝🐾

💉 We went through at least 163 rabies vaccines—because that’s how many we came with, we used every single one, and then we kept going.

📍 We implanted at least 80 microchips.

🐶🐱 That’s hundreds of animals leaving a little safer and a little more protected than when they arrived.

And those numbers matter. ❤️

💉 Every vaccine protects an animal and a community.
📍 Every microchip gives a lost pet a better chance of making it home.
✂️ Every spay/neuter conversation can prevent future unwanted litters.
🩺 Every conversation about medical care can change an animal’s life.
🏡 And every little bit of support can help keep a pet with the family who loves them.

📣 WHAT TO EXPECT THIS SUNDAY AT OUR FREE VACCINE & MICROCHIP CLINIC! 🐾💉

SUNDAY, AUGUST 16 | 12–3 PM

We’re getting ready for another busy clinic day! Here are a few things we want everyone to know before you come:

⏰ WE START AT NOON — BUT PEOPLE WILL ARRIVE EARLY!

At almost every clinic, people start showing up around 11 AM (sometimes even earlier), which means the longest lines are often right when we open.

⭐ EXPERIENCE TIP: If you don’t want to wait, COME LATER! After about 2 PM, there is usually very little wait — and sometimes no wait at all.

And there is absolutely no reason to worry about coming later because…

💉 WE ALWAYS HAVE ENOUGH VACCINES FOR EVERYONE!

Please don’t feel like you need to be first in line because you’re worried we’ll run out.

Vaccinations are critical, and they are what these clinics are all about. We plan accordingly and will NEVER turn away an animal healthy enough to be vaccinated because we ran out of vaccines.

Your pet’s vaccine will still be there at 2 PM. ❤️

📝 ONLINE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED — EVEN THOUGH YOU WILL ALSO COMPLETE A DAY-OF FORM.

We know that sounds a little repetitive, but each serves a different purpose.

Online registration saves us from having to manually type in all of YOUR information AND all of your ANIMALS’ information while you’re sitting in line. Multiply that by hundreds of animals, and you can imagine how much time it saves!

The day-of form tells us exactly which animals actually showed up that day. We’ve done this long enough to know that the animals registered aren’t always the animals that make it to the clinic.

🚗 WHEN YOU ARRIVE: YOUR ANIMALS STAY IN YOUR VEHICLE — WE COME TO YOU!

There will be two lines. Follow the directions of our team leaders when you arrive and please do not take your animals out of your vehicle until our team tells you to.

🐕 ALL DOGS MUST BE LEASHED.
🐈 ALL CATS MUST BE SECURELY IN CARRIERS.

Please don’t bring a loose dog or a cat in your arms. With this many animals in one place, these rules are about keeping your pet, other animals, and our volunteers safe.

NEED MET
🐾💔 A Plea for Momma & Axel 💔🐾

😢 This is one of the hardest posts we’ve ever had to write.

🏡💔 Due to unexpected personal circumstances, Momma and Axel’s owner must move back to New York to live with family. Sadly, these two amazing dogs cannot go with them. We told their adopter we would help her make sure her dogs were safe.

❤️ Before anyone rushes to judge, please remember that sometimes the greatest act of love is asking for help. These dogs have never been neglected or forgotten. They have been cherished every day of their lives.

🩺🐶 They each have their own Banfield Wellness Plans, are up to date on their care, and have received exceptional veterinary attention. Their owner has done everything possible to give them the best life—and now we’re asking our community to help continue that love.

🐴 FOUND: Is anyone missing this handsome little gentleman?

This mini stud has been safely contained after deciding to take himself on an adventure. Now we just need to find his owners!

We’ve already visited the nearby Amish farms in the area and have not been able to locate his home.

If you recognize him or know who he belongs to, please send Beautiful Hearts Rescue a message. We’ll put the owner directly in contact with the finder.

🎯 Our immediate goal is $350

Meet Axel, a sweet boy who urgently needs our help. ❤️

😔 Axel has been struggling with lethargy and loss of appetite. His family quickly sought veterinary care, including:
✅ Bloodwork�✅ F***l testing�✅ Parvo testing�✅ ACTH stimulation testing (to rule out Addison’s disease)

While these tests have ruled out some causes, Axel still has no diagnosis.

💸 His family has exhausted their funds trying to get him the care he needs and even offered to surrender him so he could receive treatment.

❤️ At Beautiful Hearts Rescue, we believe loved pets should stay with their families whenever possible.

🐶 Axel is loved.�🏡 Axel has a family.�🤝 We want to keep them together.

🔍 The next step is additional diagnostics and X-rays to determine what’s making Axel sick. These tests may reveal:
🚨 Foreign body or intestinal blockage�🚨 Partial intestinal obstruction�🫁 Pneumonia or aspiration�🩻 Congenital abnormalities affecting the chest or abdomen�🫀 Enlarged organs or abnormal abdominal structures�⚠️ Evidence of trauma or injury
