Samaritan Counseling, Guidance, Consulting helps people to heal, gives them hope, and empowers them to achieve life-changing growth. Are you uninsured?

Samaritan empowers individuals, families, and faith communities, from all backgrounds and faiths to achieve the health, wholeness, and purpose that God intended. Our goal is to help you to gain healing, hope, and the ability to change your life. As COUNSELORS, we provide professional counseling while showing compassion and never passing judgment. We provide GUIDANCE through coaching, spiritual direction, anger management, and support groups.

As CONSULTANTS, we serve pastors and congregations to help them enrich their ministries. We offer educational workshops for couples, parents, families, and the community at-large. Founded in 1982, Samaritan is an interdenominational nonprofit funded by fees for service and private donations. We serve all people without discriminating on any basis. Counseling ~1,200 Western Pennsylvania residents annually, our licensed therapists provide compassionate, spiritually-integrated* psychotherapy to men, women, children, couples, and families. Applying best clinical practices in the field, we treat people for wide-ranging mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual health issues.

*Our spiritually-integrated (faith-based) therapy is client-driven, meaning that it is provided to anyone who desires it, within the context of each individual's faith beliefs. We accept most major medical insurances, Medicare, and Medicaid. Unemployed? We offer financial aid for those who qualify. Our goal is to make our counseling services affordable. COVID-19 Policy: Samaritan complies with the governor's virus mitigation guidelines. Any resident of Pennsylvania can receive therapy with us via a secure (HIPAA compliant) platform or by phone. For clients and their therapists who mutually agree to in-person therapy, we provide masks, disinfectant, and fans, and only use offices that can accommodate six feet social distancing. Many war veterans suffer from PTSD—Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The main causes are experiencing life-threatening events and the loss of life of fellow soldiers. People who are not war veterans also experience trauma that leads to PTSD, although some do not realize this is true.

“When a client feels that PTSD is ‘just for war veterans,’ I patiently explain the true definition of PTSD,” said Jennifer Edmonds, a Licensed Professional Counselor with Samaritan. “Any one of us, in any given moment, could experience a traumatic event. Most of my clients share a trauma history. When they learn that I support sexual trauma survivors, they often say, ‘Well, my issues are not as bad as theirs. They probably need more help than I.’ I remind them that each client issue is important and there is no hierarchy. Each individual has different needs in treatment, but I make a strong effort to meet each client where they are, in their faith, and when practicing in the secular arena of care. I believe that it is our role as counselors to educate and reassure in working through this particular myth.”

It is difficult to talk about the horrible things that have happened in life, especially if you’ve bottled them up for years. We tend to develop our own coping skills (good and bad) to push through and move forward. At first, you may feel uncomfortable starting therapy. It’s the therapist’s role to create an emotionally safe environment for people to feel comfortable working through their issues. We can walk "hand in hand" with them, one problem at a time, to recognize how they have been carrying these issues for years. Therapy becomes their safe space to talk, process, and heal, as we guide them as "fellow travelers."
